Keeping Up with the Music This week, we will be taking a look at the kinds of music Malaysians watch on YouTube. If you’re interested in associating your brand to music content or just interested in following the latest music trends, read on! Great Mix of Local and International Artists The most recent top music searches on YouTube show a good mix of international and local flavor. Exo and Girls’ Generation are popular Korean favorites, while Wiz Khalifa and Ellie Goulding represent the American and English contingent. It’s also good to see that our local acts are being noticed and searched for as well; YouTube searches for Akim & the Majistret and Mojo increased 2703% and 125% respectively over the past 3 months. Finally, it’s great that a number of Indonesian acts are top-of-mind such as Drama Band, Cita Citata, and Ungu (Growing 89%, 200%, and 42% respectively). Strong Interest in Songs from Bangladesh, Nepal, Indonesia, Myanmar We were also curious to see if Malaysians show a strong interest in songs from neighboring countries other than Indonesia. To our surprise, we found that searches for “Indonesia Songs,” “Nepali Songs,” “Bangladeshi Songs,” and “Myanmar Songs” were much higher than searches for “Taylor Swift songs”, “Katy Perry Songs,” and so on in 2014. This finding is unusual because Taylor Swift songs should intuitively appeal to a much larger audience in Malaysia than songs from Indonesia, Myanmar, Nepal, or Bangladesh. The data strongly points to the fact that migrants from these countries are consuming music at an extremely high rate in Malaysia.
