The eCommerce Market is Booming No matter what kind of business you run, these questions must have crossed your mind at some point: do Malaysians really shop online? How many? What for? Which portals do they prefer shopping from? Let’s give that a look today. The Market for Online Shoppers is Sizable, and They Know What They Want According to a recent study in 2014 by the GlobalWebIndex, ~7M Malaysians purchase products online monthly. The top 3 product categories being purchased are Travel, Online Vouchers, and Entertainment Services, according to a 2013 study by Ipsos. If you’re an online entrepreneur, perhaps it’s time to think about selling some products from this list! Malaysians Shop from Both Local and International Online Portals Lazada is the top searched portal among this group. Malaysians searched for Lazada 2 - 3X more compared to Taobao and Zalora, ranked 2nd and 3rd respectively. Although search intent for Taobao is typically higher than that of Zalora, Zalora was able to augment its search volumes to levels higher than Taobao’s during their year-end sale in 2014. What’s interesting to see is that most of the growth in searches are happening for local regional players such as Lazada, Zalora, and Taobao. In comparison, Ebay and Amazon searches have remained flat over the past two years. So, there you have it, folks. With 7M active Malaysians shopping online and a local eCommerce industry that is growing strongly, it’s worth thinking about whether your brand could benefit from an eCommerce foray as well.
