Students should complete this at least 2-3 days prior to attending New Student Orientation or meeting with an advisor to register for classes. There is no cost for the placement and it can be taken any time at any computer.
The purpose of the placement is to give an accurate measure of your current math skills so you will have a better opportunity to be successful in your courses. There is no benefit to inflating your abilities on the placement. While you are taking the placement, do not consult with any other source for help (friends, family, web searches, textbooks, etc), and do your honest best. Use of outside resources may result in you being placed into a course you are not prepared for.
Yes. You have access to the placement for a year and can take it up to 5 times. Prior to the second attempt, students must wait 48 hours and are required to study the learning modules for a minimum of four hours. For the third attempt and beyond, it must be completed at the Testing Center on campus. Email tpc...@iusb.edu for information.
Tip: a score of 0-30 may require a pre-college math class. After the initial attempt, students that study the learning modules in ALEKS usually improve scores on their second attempt.
The Academic Centers for Excellence (ACE) offers FREE services to help you refresh your math skills in preparation for the ALEKS math course placement or simply to be BETTER PREPARED for your first college math class.
To get you started we have created sample problem sets to review and bring to coaching sessions. Problem sets are based on course placement score ranges and their associated math classes. Start with Problem Set Level 1 and continue to the next level as you make progress.
Interpreting your ALEKS Math Course Placement
The first math course you take will vary, depending on your major. You advisor will help you select the appropriate math course. In most cases a score of 31-36 is needed in order to take a college-level math course, Thus, if your score is below 31, we strongly advise working through the learning modules that ALEKS provides and taking the course placement again.
Please be advised that you will not be allowed to exempt a course via the DMAT that you are, or previously have been, registered for at UGA. (In particular, you cannot withdraw from the course once it's begun and then take the exam.) Students who have taken MATH 1101 are, however, permitted to take the DMAT to try to exempt MATH 1113.
We appreciate your financial support. Your gift is important to us and helps support critical opportunities for students and faculty alike, including lectures, travel support, and any number of educational events that augment the classroom experience. Click here to learn more about giving.
You can be placed into an appropriate math course based on either your ACT or SAT math subscore or your performance on our mathematics placement exam. If the placements determined by the subscore and the exam are different, you may choose either one after consulting with an advisor.
You MUST have a Missouri State username and password to register for and take the exam. NOTE: Greenwood students should use the GUEST option (the second link at the bottom of the page).
You are encouraged to complete the entire test to determine your eligibility for higher math courses. However, you can attempt only Part 1 during the first 30 minutes, if you wish to be eligible only for algebraic courses.
If Missouri State has not received your ACT or SAT scores or if you have obtained new scores since your admission to the University, please request that they be sent to our office of admissions. Consult the ACT website or the SAT website for more information.
