When I installed Sierra GM from El Capitan a few minutes ago, in the onboarding process I accidentally hit "yes" for uploading Desktop and Documents. I do want to do this, but not now as my computer can't stay on a connection for the days straight it will take to do so. I disabled Documents and Desktop sync through iCloud preferences, but Finder will not update and stop trying to upload the files. It moved Desktop and Documents to the iCloud Drive Directory. How can I undo this and move my Desktop and Documents back to my home folder, while stopping Finder from trying to upload them?

Copy all of your documents and desktop on iCloud and move it back to the computer. If you go to finder you will find the iCloud Drive with your dekstop and documents folder. Just copy or drag the contents and move it to the desktop/documents folder on the sidebar of finder. Unchecking the sync should stop it from syncing. Restarting the computer should fix the issue of it syncing assuming it's still doing that.

Yes I have tried restarting, resetting pRAM, restarting com.apple.bird, etc. Desktop & Documents Folders sync is off in iCloud Settings, yet my Desktop and Documents folders are in iCloud Drive (locally), This process is still trying to upload (I can't get it to stop!)

Deleting the exfiltrated items from iCloud is also painful. For some reason it seems you must drill down into each folder at the root of the iCloud Drive and delete the contents, and only then after the cloud system settles, can you delete the folder itself... but not always. The most painful is that iCloud Drive actually prevents you from deleting "Desktop" and "Documents" in the iCloud Drive.

When you have walked each folder such as "Desktop", "Documents", "Numbers", "Pages", ad nausium, and you have repeativally deleted the items at the root of the iCloud Drive which it reports cannot be deleted because of some error (in the browser interaction), you can then delete the individual folders except for Desktop and Documents.

But more importantly, this is a serious security breach in the system. macOS surreptitiously exfiltrated what would normally be critical and very private data folders and files from a customer's home directory to the "iCloud Drive" without their knowledge, permission, or any indication it was doing so.

Really frustrating problem where files and folders in a folder synced to my iCloud were not appearing in Finder. They were still on my iCloud and when I looked into my iPad which synced these files and folders, they were all there. When I went to the terminal and entered one of the iCloud synced folders (e.g. Desktop) and did ls -a, the files and folders were not there.

In the end, after a couple of hours of frustration, I solved my problem by: Opening Finder > Finder Preferences > iCloud and uncheck all the options (on my Mac these were iCloud Drive, Desktop and Documents). Close preferences, reopen and recheck the same boxes. The files and folders reappeared in my finder.

Since upgrading to Mac OS 10.5 beta desktop icons and documents do not appear in finder.
I have trying accessing these files both locally and via iCloud but both simply show the spinning wheel (loading) icon and no documents.
Any ideas please?

I have attempted to disable syncing iCloud Desktop & Documents Folders, restarting and re-enabling the syncing. That has not resolved the issue. Looks like I am going to have to recreate every folder and download every file in my documents and desktop. Yay... Lol.

In Monterey OS 12, I was able to solve this sync issue under: Apple> About this MAC> Storage tab> Manage> Recommendations> Store in iCloud... it synced up on my computer to my iCloud. I struggled and thought I would share this information because I had the iCloud set correctly in iCloud preferences and I did not sync. This is under System Information when you click the apple icon. It seemed to be what pushed the computer to show my files!

Hi, I have always used MP3TAG as the sole app for maintaining mp3 tags and never used iTunes/Music app. I store all my files in iCloud and I could always see the cover art images as the file icon in Finder (and Files app from the iPad).

I recently upgraded the OS from 10.14 Mojave to 12.6 Monterey. Now, any new mp3s, or any existing mp3 saved in MP3TAG, do not show the cover art in Finder - only a white square with grey music symbol.

My mp3 creation process (Audacity) is unchanged
Files have the same ID3v1 tag as before.
Cover art is always created same size (300x300), jpeg and high resolution
The cover art is displayed correctly when opened in MP3TAG and VLC.

That is why everything looks proper, and the artwork is intact when viewing inside iTunes, but either incomplete, or missing when viewing the files with the Finder. iTunes reads it properly, but the Finder doesn't.

The next time iTunes is lauched, it will rebuild this cache ("Processing Album Artwork..."). If one is using 9.2, chances are, the previews will be missing or incomplete in the Finder. Using the earlier bug-free versions will result in no problems.

The upside to this is that it doesn't involve faults in any of the files. The metadata in each file is intact (provided they haven't been altered since), so there won't be a need to go through the hassle of fixing the library.

Hi to everyone! This is my first post in MacRumors, but I'm an older follower.I'm writing from Spain and I get my first MAC one week ago :):apple::D.I wish to thank to everybody that contributes to this forum and expend time answering question for...

I think you maybe correct about iCloud
Any file copied back to Desktop from iCloud now showing the cover - even those missing the cover when created on the Desktop. The cover is always lost when copied back to icloud

Thanks for your feedback.
After more checking following the previous posts, I found that relaunching Finder via the /Force Quit Menu seems to fix the missing artwork in Finder for both local and iCloud.
I followed your suggestion for checking any hidden files in iCloud. I used the keyboard shortcut CMD/Shift/Period (.) which toggles hidden files in Finder for any location.
I found only ,trash and ,plist files in the top level folders, Nothing in lower levels.

Since relaunching Finder resolves the topic I am now left to investigate why only the mp3 created in Monterey are missing Cover art in the Files app in iOS. I contacted Apple with this but no response yet. I will update with their response

You cannot change the behaviour of the finder with settings in MP3tag.
But: set only V1 and APE to be removed, do not set V2.
Then use "Cut tag" - this should remove (only) the set tag versions.
Just a check: if you have set the ALBUMARTIST and that is also displayed by the finder, then the finder reads the V2 tags.

That makes sense that the artwork renderer in Finder have crashed or hang, and a restart would solve that. The files will not be shown in Finder even if you turn on hidden files, you can go to Terminal and CD to a certain folder and do rm ".DS_Store" and dot_clean -m, that will remove and regenerate the files if required by Finder.

I added ALBUMARTIST tag but could not see the field in Finder (File info?) and was unsuccessful removing IDv1 tags. I deleted the .DS_Store from iCloud/Downloads folder but no effect when copy/move a new file there.

Little birds live in your Mac, chirping away at iCloud, telling it about all your updates. If only it were that cute. Rather, the bird and cloudd daemons are autonomous, continuously operating programs that monitor for queued items for syncing and perform the necessary data exchanges.

The Apple senior tech I spoke with suggested that I try restarting into Safe mode, which disables all sorts of background items that launch at startup. Safe mode can be a helpful way to figure out if a startup process is causing a problem.

Because I had older Wi-Fi routers and a gigabit Internet connection, I initially connected my Mac mini directly via Ethernet to my primary router to ensure I could always get the best throughput. Later, I upgraded to 802.11ac/Wi-Fi 5 and now 802.11ax/Wi-Fi 6, which can easily hit 1 Gbps. Despite the Ethernet connection, I leave Wi-Fi enabled because Apple requires Wi-Fi for many Continuity features, such as Handoff.

Hi Glen, a couple years ago, I stopped using my Amazon Glacier for archive and went to iCloud. I uploaded my files from the Safari iCloud interface rather than expecting this work to take place in the background from of macOs. Almost everything went lickety-split. But I did have a hitch as well - and Apple support came through. The issue for me was that the Safari iCloud interface would balk at files larger than 10 GB even though the iCloud handles files up to 50 GB. The 10 GB upload limit turns out to be a hard stop for the Safari iCloud interface. So for the very largest files I had to use the traditional desktop iCloud folder. All of my information is current to my experience in 2021 and maximum file sizes could be different - but the good news is that this is something that Apple Support knows.

This problem of the iCloud sync is not resolved for systems that have their home directory on an external drive. At this time, there appears to be no fix but to turn off iCloud Drive if you have your home directory on an external drive. Once I turned off the cloud drive, I was able to get the system back up and working. It appears that Apple is not testing new releases with home directories on external drives; this is the second release that has had issues if you have moved your home directory.
