Hi Deirdre
Pitch went fine, but Mira are M&B essentially, so not really for me and the changes they said I would need to make (I.e put the theme in foot high letters from page 1 and get the hero and heroine together immediately) are not for me, so I won't be following up their offer. I never thought they would be for me though, but it was a useful experience none the less and it has made me rethink my intro before submitting to a few more places I do want to try.
Learnt that debut authors, even with agents, are only getting digital deals with very rare exceptions, like M&B Series and the odd spectacular debut. Also learnt that Choc Lit are taking up to 9 months with acceptances and offer digital first for debuts, with a more or less guarantee of the 2nd book in print...
Finally I learnt that like Alex I might be heading in a different direction and, for me, it might be Middle Grade, which I hadn't even heard of before the conference. The editor I pitched to said I had great characters and a young, fresh and fun voice but, as you'll see from the pics, I sadly don't have a face to match! As with Alex, it has consolidated a few things for me and I think one more year in the NWS might be as far as I'll go with 'romance' before I try some other routes.
