Hi guys

A while ago Alex (with her lawyer head on) urged caution about the use of photos on our blog and, as I was debating as to whether I could use something from Google images for our Wednesday Wondering, hubby did a search for a cautionary tale he'd come across recently. Said tale is attached (pasted from a blog so links won't work cos he found it on his laptop but his email account is on his Mac so he couldn't just paste me the blog link).

Anyway, it makes for a very interesting read. Please take heed!

I don't imagine we'll be in trouble for any pics of books on our readers review because we're promoting those books for the authors but I'm wondering if it may be worth posing that question on Romna or even seeking permission from the writer.

Hmm, minefield ... or is it mindfield. It's one of those phrases I'm never sure about. Same as pet lip or pep lip. I used pet lip in my MS and my reader picked up on it.

Crikey Julie what a cautionary tale!! What an awful thing for you to have gone through, and to not be able to tell anyone either, I would have struggled with that too.

I would have thought exactly the same as you, that the worse that can happen and you have to  offer a grovelling apology..

I most certainly wouldn't chase anyone for money who had made a simple mistake and instantly took it down unless I knew that they had made shedloads of dosh. I think that's awful and I hope he gets Tasmanian Willy Rot or some such comeuppance.

I can see the point though, I suppose if someone put one of my stories on a website without asking me I'd be pretty peeved too.

Thanks for telling us though & I'll pass the message on & if I ever use that sort of website I'll know which pix to avoid!

Hi Julie,

Thanks for sharing the cautionary tale about the photos.  I have had clients come to me with similar experiences.  One was a community theatre which used a photo from Google images and got a threatening letter from a firm of solicitors acting for the copyright owner.  I did manage to sort that one out with a grovelling apology and the promise never to do it again.
Sometimes I think being a lawyer makes me too hyper cautious but after reading about this blogger's experience I'm thinking maybe hyper cautious isn't a bad thing!
