There are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. You need to contact the cartridge manufacturer and find out why its not working. Try a different cartridge supplier and check if that works.

The problem, as specifically stated by my HP printer is that "The indicated cartridges have been blocked by the printer firmware because they contain a non-HP chip. This printer is intended to work only with new or reused cartridges that have a new or reused HP chip." (see photo attached).

With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware

The third-party ink cartridges will work. But there are many cartridges in the market which is refilled and sometimes the chip is not configured to work with the printer. Our firmware is up to date (photo attached--the Status says "Up-to-date" and the "Update" button is grayed out and unavailable to click). The problem has never been with the non-HP cartridges. Again, they were working fine until we recently updated the firmware.

My HP Officejet Pro 8710 all in one will not allow me to use a non HP printer black cartridge. I just put in another new (just out of wrapper) non-HP brand new black cartridge and this time the printer says "The indicated cartridges are not communicating correctly with the printer." This is not due to there being any dirt etc. on the interface. It was working fine with an HP black cartridge, but as that cartridge ran out of ink I again tried to use a non-HP cartridge as I need to print.

In the past, when I tried to use non-Hp cartridges it would state that it was not accepting a non-hp cartridge or something to that effect. I assume this is just HP's latest way to stop me from using non-HP products.

3) Go to Settings - Security - Administrator Settings - Printer Updates and unclick "All Firmware Updates" and "Only Web-Downloaded Firmware Updates". (This is so your HP 8710 won't automatically install new firmware that takes your non-HP cartridges hostage).

The only problem is: When i don't use the printer for 20-30 minutes the printer freezes with a white text error message on a black screen which says "Printer error - A problem occured with the printer. - Turn printer off and on again." (translated by myself from original german language error message shown on the actual display) - When i turn the printer off and on again everything is working normal, until i don't use the printer for 20-30 minutes again and the same error message appears again.

Same here. Since some days my printer got a white screen and freezes. Mostly in the evening, sometimes in between. Pushing the power button retarts the printer but this freeze thing comes again and again. Very annoying. Wondering there is still no update to solve this issue.

But as HP does nothing for us / doesn't even answer, i have just googled "How to Downgrade HP 952XL Printer Firmware" and found an older firmware for HP Officejet 8710. - I have just installed this older firmware and disabled automatic firmware updates afterwards. - Now i will see if the issue is gone / solved with the older firmware.

But i have to mention just downgrading the firmware was not enough, i had to do a "semi-full reset" in the hidden service menu, too. (Press 4x times the "back"-arrow where you will find the "Support-Menu" with the "semi full-reset"-option). - Just asking myself if a "semi full-reset" (without firmware downgrade) would have also fix the reoccuring error message.

I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your HP 8710 printer after a firmware update. The error code you provided, B8BB2E52, seems to be related to a firmware problem. Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot and resolve the issue.

I called HP Support and they walked me through the unplugging wait for 1 minute and turn it back on. No help. They had me take all the cartridges out turn it off and back on. The end result was the same I got the error. HP wanted to sell me a new printer then and there. Tech agent told me he was also certified in sales.......really.....how convenient.

But wait I did find the issue......we have 3 PC's and iPhones and tablets that connect to the printer. I noticed that when one of the laptop's was closed the printer would work. I am running windows 10 on the PCs. I tried multiple things on this PC and nothing worked. I saw in the Windows store there was a printer manager cost about $3.99 so I downloaded it. Turns out the suspect PC things in the print queue, when tried to send things to the printer the error condition on the printer happened. I deleted everything in the queue and now the pinter works. Final result - I took back the extra cartridges I bought from CostCo and got $343.00 back! Yes the ink cost more than a new printer. I am running the ink out of the printer then tossing it out. So while I was at CostCo I bought an Epson Printer with the large ink cartridges.

Even if Epson is as helpful as HP was with a firmware issue. I'll be happy because I don't feel that HP earned my loyalty with this issue. It was hard to find an agent to talk to and fine people like us are not skilled with the intimate knowledge required to support a printer. HP has a plan to not support what they seem to think are older printers. I no longer have and HP. When my ink runs out HP will be at the curb.

Had successfully set up my new Officejet 8710, got all my mobile devices hooked up. Worked fine....until a couple days later. Unable to print anything from wifi via laptop, phone, tablet. All had worked. I see others with same issue and they did a firmware update. I need more specific info. Where do I find that update to download and run?

My grandparents know that monochrome printing can require color cartridges too (duplicate question), but loathe to buy a monochrome printer or color ink cartridges. So how can they compel the printer to print, regardless of the print quality?

The Officejet 8710 is among the HP printers that cannot print if any ink cartridge is empty (there is no override provision as some printers have). If any color cartridges are low, you can set it on black-only to minimize the use of color, but the color cartridges cannot register as empty.

Your printer is designed to print only when all ink cartridges have ink. Some ink from all the ink cartridges is used in periodic servicing tasks. This helps to prevent issues such as printhead clogs and poor print quality. There is no way to bypass this feature.

If one or more color ink cartridges are low but not empty and you want to minimize the use of color ink, change the settings in the HP software to print with black ink only (grayscale). If you print with black ink only, the other ink cartridges must have ink for the printer to print.

HP's position on the printer not operating with an empty cartridge is based on a premise that the printer could be damaged otherwise. So there is no way around that without hacking the printer (which would void any warranty, would be very difficult to do since the firmware is proprietary, and stands a good chance of totally ruining the printer). The printers are inexpensive, and nobody stands to profit from investing in figuring out how to do it. So I wouldn't expect to see any kind of workaround for this.

However, there is potentially a way to get it printing again at less cost than buying HP ink cartridges. The OJ 8710 is among the HP printers that employ a security chip. This locks out the printer if it detects a "counterfeit" ink cartridge (which is for your benefit to ensure that you get the very best printing experience from your HP printer). :-)

For some printer models that didn't originally come with this "feature", HP implemented it surreptitiously through a software upgrade. There was heavy pushback, threats of legal action, etc., and HP decided to rethink its policy. They now have an optional software upgrade that can be manually downloaded from HP if you know about it, which will turn off this verification and allow the use of non-HP or refilled HP cartridges.

Just a warning, some other printers have an option to turn off the check for OEM ink cartridges. When you do it, it disables a lot of advanced features in the printer driver software, and they claim that if the printer malfunctions, you're on your own. So they let you do it but strongly discourage it. I don't know if that applies to your model, but you might want to inquire.

HP believes in fair competition and does not employ technology preventing the use of refilled and remanufactured cartridges. Our printers with the dynamic security feature may not operate with a cartridge that does not include an Original HP chip.

This seems to be saying that the feature only addresses third party cartridges manufactured from scratch, with a non-HP chip. That would still leave the issue of original or refilled cartridges that claim to be empty based on character count, and prevent printing even though there's still ink left in the cartridge. But at least you could buy a new, unneeded fake cartridge for less than the cost of a new, unneeded HP cartridge. Ah, the joys of inkjet printers.

But here's a link to the HP Customer Support Knowledge Base that describes turning this off for your printer. However, your model is included in a group where manufacturing date appears to determine whether you can disable it:
