I've never really done anything with this, and I don't remember anyone really asking, but it came up in the session on Saturday and I think it could work, provided that it's constrained in some way so that characters aren't just in downtime all the time. There are some example downtime activities listed in the Players Handbook, and covered online at https://www.dndbeyond.com/sources/basic-rules/adventuring#DowntimeActivities
Mainly these seem to cover...
- research
- working an actual job
- crafting
- learning new skills and tools
As far as downtime goes, we've already incorporated this a little, for example Tagariel has been studying the Black Path at night, Torvar established a house of healing in the woods, and a group of players met with Kazkan to survey the plains. But there's no reason why we couldn't extend this to include study of Builder artifacts brought home from the outside world, etc.
If there's anything you'd like your characters to be getting up to between expeditions, either post something on this thread, or feel free to get in touch directly. It doesn't matter if your idea doesn't align perfectly with the ideas listed in the PHB, if it makes sense we can probably make something work.
