I guess Apple is taking Droid seriously, and being proactive about it.

If that were true then they would let me upgrade my 1st gen iPhone to the
3Gs for $99 without having to sign another two year contract.

They won't give you *any* incentive without a contract- that would be
financially foolish. You're not getting an subsidized phone from any
company without a contract; they want to have a guaranteed revenue
stream to offset the loss of the handset subsidy.

Yep. And that is yet another reason why I will be leaving them at the end
of my contract. At least with T-Mobile they will allow me to pro-rate if I
decide to buy a new phone in mid-contract.

I would have stayed with TMobile if their coverage had been better
than pathetic here. They had great customer service, and better rate
plans than anyone else. I just couldn't abide losing coverage on a
block-by-block basis, and if you are traveling forget about reception
anywhere but on interstates.
I'm still holding out for either Verizon to get the iPhone or AT&T to
finally implement their upgraded network. There's not much choice
beyond that for me.
