Aww cmon Cary. Couldn't you put this in the thread I posted earlier?
Give me the illusion of credbility on this group? ;)

Here are my thoughts from my blog:

Jury is still out on this for me- but I will probably pick them up.

I'm waiting for the inevitable wave of hormone-induced posts that (like myself) describe the following cover as "Ol' Doc plays 'Hide the Blue Sausage'."  Very interesting pose- it should make for extensive debate online.  :-P  (What would my life be without Adam Hughes' work to bring out the Giggidy in me?)

My prediction is that J. Michael Straczynski will quit each mini-series halfway through.

I am just curious as to why the heck they would do this now?  Is DC so behind the curve that they wait 3 years AFTER the movie comes out to produce a new series of books about the characters?

To me the story is great on its own.  This isn't a world that needs further exploration.  If I wanted to read about Rorshach and Nite Owl before the events of WATCHMEN I would read old Blue Beetle and Question stories.

First off, adding Van's comment which got put into another thread:
>>My prediction is that J. Michael Straczynski will quit each mini-series halfway through.<<

After suddenly realizing, halfway through, that he is morally outraged
and opposed to the whole idea of doing them without Moore.

--Van

Now my comment:

You notice that both of JMS's books are only four issues? Doesn't he
normally make it to about 5 or 6 before he quits? ;)

Personally, I don't have a problem with this. If this fails, it
doesn't sully the repuation or the quality of Watchmen (whatever one
may think of it, and I know opinions vary greatly on that series). I
mean, I don't think the Dark Knight Strikes Again hurt the rep of Dark
Knight Returns, and that was by the same creator, even.

Right now, the Dawryn Cooke Minutemen and the Len Weid/Jae Lee
Ozymandias books are the ones which have my interest. But I taking a
more cautious, "wait and see" approach with these comics.

Luke,  +1 to you for starting the thread(s) for new Watchmen! You gots cred here, no worries.

So Bailey and Pat are lukewarm with regard to the new minis. Luke has some interest in a couple titles but not all of them.

What about the rest of you collectors? Does this excite you? Are you really excited to see what Dr Manhattan was doing before the Watchmen series (I mean more than we already know which is seemingly everything that matters...) or what Silk Spectre was up to?  I'll admit that these series do instill a little curiosity in me, but not nearly enough to want to buy them...i'll just rad Shag's or have him tell me the story lines.

I don't plan to read any of these.

However, if pressed I'd choose the Minutemen (because the writer/artist is GREAT!), Rorschach (because the character is interesting), and Dr Manhattan (not because I care about the character at all, but because Adam Hughes will draw a REALLY hot Silk Spectre).

Just my two cents.  And again, let me reiterate, I won't be buying these.

If MJS is against them, why did he agree to do them? He should have had that in his contract.

It's not that JMS is against them, it's two things:

1) He quits most projects halfway through. He's got a history of doing this.
2) Doing prequels for Watchman is just a bad idea.  Not specific to JMS, just a bad idea all the way around.

The solicits are out for the first round of the Before Watchmen books,
and the main thing which stands out to me is thagt DC is breaking
their own pricing rules. The books are all 32 pages but cost $3.99.
Normally, DC books which are 32 pages cost $2.99, and those which are
40 pages at $3.99.

Very disappointed in DC for this pricing/page count decision,

Shag, you're right.  I had forgotten about the several miniseries which were $3.99.  But I am pretty sure that this is the first time which DC has broken that out since the relaunch.  Admittedly, Before Watchmen is not part of the "New 52," but it still puts a big wet blanket on the modicum of enthusiasm I had for the project.

Interesting thoughts from JMS on Before Watchmen:

http://www.newsarama.com/comics/jms-before-watchmen-details.html

"Straczynski: You have to compare this apples to apples if you want to
bring Babylon 5 into this. This isn't a matter of DC doing Watchmen
when Alan wants in and wants to do it. He's chosen not to engage, even
when DC offered him ownership of the characters and even when they
would cut him a check enough to dim the lights at DC for several
weeks.

If Warners wanted to do a B5 prequel, and I said no... if they offered
me all the money in the world and a big budget for the series and I
said no... if they offered me total creative freedom and ownership of
the show, lock stock and phased-plasma pistols and I said no... if
they waited 25 years for me to change my mind, and I still didn't want
to do it... then they'd be absolutely right to proceed without me,
because I had opted to take myself out of that process. "

Worth checking out.
