So did anyone (I'm looking at you Shag) watch the Doctor Who Christmas special yesterday?  How was it?

I discovered yesterday that with my new cable package I actually now get BBC America. I thought about watching it, but I have not seen anything of Doctor Who since the end of the first season with Matt Smith.  So I am pretty far behind.  Although the Christmas ones are often fairly standalone, I guess.

We are still trying to catch up on the series via Netflix, but Maria is completely hooked.

I started watching the show when "Rose" first aired on Sci-Fi Channel (back before the SyFy name even).  My wife started watching with the early David Tennant episode with the werewolves in Victoria England.  We watched right through until the end of Tennant's run; my wife got so mad that he was leaving that she said she didn't want to watch Matt Smith (also, he "looks too young.")

I watched the first season of Matt Smith on my own; I've made some overtures of watching it with her but she doesn't seem all that interested, unfortunately, indicating that we are waaay off track in our watching of The Pretender on DVD to start a new series.  I'm otherwise just way behind at this point between various tokusatsu shows I watch on my own (including Ultraman, GoGo Sentai Boukenger, Kamen Rider Wizard, and Ultraseven X) and not having a good source to stream them during my lunch break.

At least she entertains the notion; for neither love nor money can I get her to watch Ultraman with me! :D

There is a little bit of continuity with the first ep from this season, Asylum of the the Dalecks .  I'd hold off until you have at least watched that one.

I saw it. Story was pretty ok. Mostly seems to be a vehicle to make you fall in love with the new companion. And it worked!

Oops. I replied to the wrong email in the last email. This is the one I meant to say...
I haven't even seen the episode yet and I'm already in love her.

As River would say, SPOILERS...

You couldn't be more right. You simply can't help falling for this girl. It's even touched on in the show itself.

The story was fun, but not deep. The villain featured a nod to the classic series. The Doctor accepted the companion a little too quickly, but again you can't avoid thinking she's cute. It felt like a season premiere. Lots changed. What did everyone think of the new TARDIS?  Thought it was cool, but will miss Matt's old TARDIS. New opening credits look great and definitely nod to the Tom Baker credits of old.

I loved it. I actually thought it was one of the best Christmas specials. And, yes, I am extra in love. I'm simply smitten.

I watched this last night. This is the first season where I've religiously watched every episode. I was in and out last season. The new companion is amazing, I look forward to finding out who she really is.

PS.
Bow Ties are cool.

I'm still a little puzzled on how their going to work out her timeline, but I'm definitely looking forward to it.

As for the special itself, I think the Doctor works much better as part of an ensemble as opposed to Dr + companion only, so having Vastra, et al. as part of the core group, the in-crowd, made for a better show in general.
