I am not sure that I understand the point which the author is trying to make in that blog post.

That having been said, I don't think Google+ will ever amount to much.  I really like it, personally, but really, I don't keep up with many people on there except Ed and Cary and the Carolina Panthers.  I won't/can't get a Facebook account, so I will continue to use it, but sometimes I wonder "why bother?"

I like the google hangouts they make meeting face to face easier. Skype requires you to pay for that type of service when there is more than one person on a video call. Google could scrap plus and keep the hangouts and I would be happy.

The point I think the author was trying to make is that Plus isn't going to be truly viable as a social network, much less a competitor to Facebook. It won't likely die, though, because of Google's clout and extensive reach- it'll likely transform into more of a registry of businesses and commercial ventures.
