Hello All,
Does anyone know why we do not have mail boxes in front
of our homes and why are we forced to collect our mails from the
mailboxes setup by the postal services which is X blocks away?I think
The townhouse association should take this issue into consideration.

Mayank,

I think 116 mailboxes (one in front of every home) would be a terrible eyesore and make the community appear very cluttered.  I would suggest stopping by the group mailbox on your way in and out of the community.  Sorry, but I would not personally support individual mailboxes.

Don,

I appreciate your thought but don't agree at all. Mailbox is a thing for convenience and  comfort and definitely not a thing that can dazzle or beautify community.

Sometimes, due to harsh weather conditions or extremely hectic schedules practically it becomes very difficult to walk all the way to the group mailbox. Most of us (atleast I) has to make a conscious effort to go and check mails regularly and sometimes even miss on few important mails that otherwise because of the individual mailbox (one in front of my home)would become a totally effortless experience.

Anshu,

I am sorry that you do not agree at all.  However, that is where I stand on the issue.  I do not see the group mailboxes as an inconvenience.  The group mailbox for my home is not close in proximity but poses no problem whatsoever.  If individual mailboxes is something that appeals to a homeowner, my position is that they should have chosen a community/neighborhood that offers them.

See the image attached with this email. If we have mailboxes like figure(a) then they can be considered as eyesores and have a potential of cluttering up the space but a small door mounted mailbox can never be an eyesore(see figure b).I personally think that a door mounted mailbox offers residents tremendous convenience and the idea must be evaluated rather than reject it outright. It would be very undemocratic to do so.After all the association has a duty to evaluate good ideas proposed by homeowners (and implement them) apart from issuing violation letters etc.It is upto the residents, homeowners (and association ?)to pass a collective verdict on this.Besides I think if the prospective homeowners were made aware of these facts as a part of homebuying process they might have been in a better situation to consider their decisions.

The other FACT that should be noted is that the group mailbox that we have currently is the property of USPS.It is not used by other's like Fedex or UPS.I always receive the letters from UPS and Fedex lying on the ground in front of the door .So what we have not is not truly a mailbox it is just a "USPS ONLY MAILBOX".We DONOT have a true mailbox!!

Mayank,

You are correct in saying that the current mailbox is the property of the USPS.  In fact, ALL mailboxes intended for U.S. mail are the property of the USPS and no one including FedEX or UPS can use them (group or individual mailboxes).  Originally, I was thinking that Anshu was talking about individual mailboxes on wooden posts.  I would personally adamantly oppose that idea.  However, I am not necessarily opposed to some type of mailbox attached to the homes.  I don't think a door mounted solution would work for those that have storm doors (not enough space between the storm door and entrance door).  I think a nice looking mailbox mounted under the light on the front of every garage would be a good place.  Every home would need to have the exact mailbox and they would all have to be mounted in the same place.  There is also the cost of the mailboxes and installation to consider.  The association does not have the money necessary to support this.  Also, I think it is very important to realize that your mail (incoming and outgoing) would no longer be secure.  Anyone could walk up and take the mail out of the box.  Also, I want everyone to realize that just because I am personally opposed to any suggestion someone makes does not mean that it will not come to fruition.  There are 5 members on the board and the majority rules.  However, I will vote according to what I think is best for the community.  Feel free to pursue the idea and let's see how it goes.

Thanks,

Don

The mailbox I had in mind is a LOCKING WALL MOUNTED mailbox which could be mounted on wall.See the image attached for a sample. This sample mailbox is :
  • Product Dimensions: 19 x 4.8 x 12.5 inches ; 12 pounds
  • Shipping Weight: 14.00 pounds
  • Made out of galvanized steel.
  • and retail cost is USD just 18.99!! I found it at amazon.com.

A locking wall mounted mailbox will provide the following features:-
(a)Does not look bad.(We can decide the model/make etc and positioning, dimensions in our board meeting )
    (b)Does not clutter up space.
(c)Provides very easy accessibility to mails.
(d)All mails are secure(USPS,FEDEX and UPS...).Currently only our usps mails are secure.
(e)Does not cost a fortune. We can decide how to pay for this.In the worst case we can get it paid by the homeowner and I think homeowners will not mind that provided the value that it brings. If we can contemplate one time assessments of around $200 for dead shrubs I think we can definitely make a case for ~$20 one time assessment that would greatly benefit people.

    regards

Interesting discussion. Don't have much to add. I don't dislike the current group mailboxes, neiter would I mind coughing up 20$ (+ installation?) if the board members decide to get personal mail boxes.

If the majority of the homeowners like the idea of mail boxes on their
homes then we should investigate the feasibility.
First we need to communicate the idea to everyone and then someone
(Mayank?) needs to form a committee to determine:
If it is allowed (Postal service, county regulations)
Type of mailboxes
cost of installation, etc.

Then the committee can present the information to the board and we can
make an informed decision on the matter.
Just my opinion
