Hello All,

It's been a very long time since I've sent an update on what's happening with my cancer situation.  In fact, I don't think I filled everyone in last fall when a PET scan revealed a spot of cancer again (I was so pissed I simply didn't want to talk about it!).  At that time, we began a new round of treatment with some different drugs, particularly a new one called Erbitux.  Well, it was a long winter and spring!  While I tolerated the treatment pretty well overall, by this spring I had developed a terrible rash on my face (and actually in other areas as well) that was simply awful.  This is an expected reaction to the Erbitux and, in fact, the doctor said that indications are that those who get the rash have much better outcomes from the drug than if the rash doesn't appear (while at first I said "then bring it on" by mid-May I had had enough!).   Most of my hair has fallen out (and many of you have seen the wig I am now wearing). The cumulative effect was getting to me.

Good news though!  The latest PET scan, just done June 4th, now shows no evidence of disease!  I've not had a treatment since May 28th. I'm feeling so much better and my face is actually looking healthy again (no, the hair is not growing back in yet).  It's amazing how quickly the body rebounds.

Unfortunately, my oncologist does not believe we can take a break.  He has said from the beginning that this cancer is one that can be knocked down but not out.  While there is no evidence of disease at this time, he wants to be sure that we keep attacking what may be undetectable on the scans so it can't begin to grow again.  So, I begin a new  "maintenance" treatment on Monday and will be on a weekly schedule for treatments for at least the next six months.  The drugs will be adjusted so hopefully they won't take such a toll.  He's also saying that occasional breaks this summer will be possible so I can enjoy vacation and other activities.

I want to thank you all for your prayers and support.  I know that all of it plays a part in getting me to this no-evidence-of-disease point.  I truly appreciate it all.  It means a lot to me.

The American Cancer Society says they want to celebrate birthdays.  Well, I will be celebrating a birthday next week and can thank the power of these drugs, the knowledge and kindness of the medical community I've been associating with over the past 3 1/2 years, your prayers and support, and the blessings of God for getting me to 61.  Thank you!

I'm ready to get into summer and enjoy it!  Hope to connect with all of you somewhere during this summer.

Joan
