With truckers hours in the news it brings up the question of how many
jobs have dangerously long work hours. I don't mean the occasional long
hours at the start/end of a show (but that still can be a problem), I
mean on the job for long hours on a regular basis. When I was doing
fireworks barge shows I found our tug boat only had a 2-man crew who
would be on the entire time we were under power (over 24 hours), and
this was normal for them. They had limited hours per week but no limit
on how many hours in a row.

Then there's all the people who aren't allowed to work "full time" as
that would kick in extra expenses for the employer.

Does anyone actually work 8 hours/day, 40 hours/week or is that a myth
that we were taught in school?

Yes - and about 50% more.

On both union & nonunion movies, 56 hours [four 14-hour days] is not
unusual. Two more typical 14-hr days are 'overtime'. Time spent by
lawyers will dwarf this number regularly. Clients want and will pay
for this service.
