I was just doing some work on an automatic fill water bowl for our
chickens/ducks and was thinking how simple and reliable the water valve
is in this.

This goes in my mental note file for future need...

Most units use a standard float that presses a needle into a seat
against the water pressure. The float takes up room, the valves leak (a
lot) and you can't take the bowl part off for cleaning.

This one

uses a standard Schrader tire valve screwed into a pipe aiming down
inside a larger pipe with a capped bottom. The large pipe is attached
to the bowl and hangs off a spring that pulls the bowl up to open the
valve. As the bowl fills, the spring stretches and the Shrader valve
closes. You can unhook the spring to remove the bowl for cleaning and
the valve stays closed. Water pressure helps hold the valve CLOSED.
Repair just requires borrowing a tire valve from a random car in the
parking lot.

If you need a float activated one, turn the pipe assembly upside down
and attach a cylindrical float to the outer pipe so it lifts the outer
pipe off the valve.
