May, 2011
The biggest day of the year at The Royale, Derby Day, is back. It’s the tradition that began virtually at the same time as the restaurant’s opening six years ago, and it’s back this weekend, Saturday, May 7. You’re best-served to get information on this event at our Facebook page, which features all of the notes on the event, from our hat contest to tips on where to buy your holiday finery. We’ll also have some special attractions that afternoon, along with classic touches like the mint julep station.
Again, please become a friend of ours on Facebook for all the updates on this special day, which will feature a $6 cover until race time, which is just past 5:00 p.m. Assume at early entrance in order to enjoy our varied offerings.
Which, we might note, includes the patio. Our fire pit’s been refurbished, for unseasonably cold days. Our fish pond’s been reinforced, with plenty of swimmers to gawk at. And table service is fully back for the season, so inquire with anyone on duty about getting a great outdoor seat between now and fall.
In the meantime, here’s the list of all the great May happenings at The Royale, with this last note: we’ll be open for dinner and drinks this Sunday, May 8, but in honor of Mother’s Day, we won’t be opening until 5 p.m.

Cocktail Museums
Every Sunday, house mixologist Robert Griffin tackles some of the most interesting taste concoctions in town, featuring classic cocktails and new concoctions. Two holidays fall on Sunday this month: it’s Mother’s Day on the 8th, which equals no day hours at The Royale, though we will have dinner and CMS offerings; and on the 29th, it’s Memorial Day, meaning a light addition of specialty drinks. Here’s what Robert says about the upcoming week:
5.8 - Repeat of the 7 Ladies & a Communist menu, which includes the Blue Lady, Brown Lady, Lavender Lady, White Lady, Chinese Lady, Pink Lady, Ladies' Cocktail and The Communist.
5.15 - Amateur Night - drinks created by non-professionals, including JP Morgan's Alamagoozlum, Vanderbilt's Stinger, the Presbyterian, and the Fred Collins Fizz.
5.22 - Tiki Daiquiris - the Daiquiri was the template for many tiki drinks, on this night we'll explore some principal variations and some antecedents - Beachcomber's Gold, Royal Daiquiri, Beachcomber's Punch, Navy Grog, Jasper's Jamaican Daiquiri, and the Bacardi Cocktail.
5.29 - It’s Memorial Day weekend, so I may have some simple menus on hand, but do not plan a full-on slate since it's likely to be pretty damn busy.
