Hi everybody, meet Steve Smith.  I mentioned this in our meeting and talked to Will a bit more about it as well.  Steve operated the Panda Athletic Club, a program for at risk youth, for a couple of years.  By chance he remembers Preston.  He has quite a bit of real world experience with what we are doing and very graciously has volunteered to answer any questions he can.  Steve and I had a conversation about the costs and operational needs of operating a gym.

Steve, the start of the overview document is below.

Thanks

Blake

TEAM PRESTO

The Team Presto organization will be formed to help disadvantaged youth in the Berkley/North County area.  Founded in memory of Preston Freeman, a promising young Berkley boxer who was tragically murdered, Team Presto will use sports to engage young adults and their fascination with sports success to teach them economic literacy, an understanding of what they will need to succeed in life.

Team Presto will offer a hybrid program, a combination of activity and education.  Using existing youth facilities, Team Preston will operate a boxing program for different age groups.  Team Preston’s trainers will work with the youths to help them learn to box.  The sports training will be combined with conversations about the importance of character and discipline to boxing success and any other activity.  After training Team Presto will hold classes on economic literacy.  Team Preston will use their fascination with the financial success that sports can bring as a starting point for economic literacy.  Beginning with a simple understanding of our economy and the role of banks and the government, Team Presto will build on this understanding to teach the basics of economic interaction  – credit, bank accounts, etc., - and  how to lead an economically successful life.

Team Presto is being formed by Preston’s family.  The organization is in the early stages of development.  A corporation is being formed and research has begun for an eventual 501c3 filing with the IRS.  Conversations have begun with existing youth programs and facilities in the N. County and Berkley area.  Team Presto’s goal is to continue with program development while securing a sponsorship with an existing not for profit that will allow Team Presto to begin its fundraising efforts.
