Messed with this plug-in for awhile, found minimal helpful use from this. It helped my bass tracks a bit happy for that. The metal preset just completely distorts and ruins everything if placed on my master bus I found more use placing this on individual tracks and adding minor tweaks no presets. Absolutely worth 5$. My mistake was first I thought it was a fine tuning EQ board. To tweak specific Frequencies on the master similar to the EQ setting on your phone or iTunes. I was wrong which is ok no points lost for that.

The JST Maximiser is very different to other mastering tools-it's not just a limiter. You can really shape the tone of the mix using the tone, saturation controls and also the 3 or 4 band clipper-it's a very interesting way of working. Obviously, it's best to get the mix sounding how you want it at the mix stage but there's a lot you can do in the JST Maximiser to add the finishing touches to a mix. For example the bass enhancer adds a nice low-end and you can mono out the bass to give it more punch and clarity. I also love the exciter because it brings out more low-level/background detail in the mix. I'm not the best mixer and have problems getting low-level/background elements to sit well and be well defined in the mix and the exciter really helps polish off that part of the mix. Still experimenting with the various different clipper/limiter/maximiser configurations, but overall it's a very interesting and useful tool.
