I was checking Chicago's CBPA classes this fine January day and came across the pleasant surprise that Paul Moxon (of Vandercook fame) is the Sward Visiting artist and THUS...is offering some invaluable classes on Vandercook Maintenance!
Perhaps those of you who own your own could use this opportunity to access a vault of information in person!

Below is information from the site, or you can go to the Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts' website to find more information on registration.

Proof Press Finesse
January 5-6
10-5
Limit 10 students
$195 (Members $175) (Add Vandercook Maintenance (see below) for a discounted total of $350 or $332 for members)
Instructor: Paul Moxon
, Sward Visiting Artist
Developed for intermediate printers, this problem-solving workshop will help improve the technical quality of your presswork. With a focus on production printing using proof presses we will closely examine the control of inking, cylinder packing, proper height of plates, form imposition, lockup and registration aids. By standardizing materials (as much as possible) we will do “minimum makeready” to achieve maximum results — just like Vandercook intended. Bravely bring examples of your worst printing to critique in class.

Vandercook Maintenance
January 7-8
10-5
Limit 12 students
$175 (Members $157) (Add Proof Press Finesse (see above) for discounted total fee of $350 or $332 for members)

Instructor: Paul Moxon
, Sward Visiting Artist
Join Paul Moxon for an in-depth review of the parts and functions of the Vandercook. Learn all the points of maintenance, lubrication and cleaning. This workshop takes you beyond cranking the press and into the mechanical what and why essential for troubleshooting. Paul will explain the differences between various models, so bring your questions, press photos and/or broken parts. Whether you use studio presses, own your own press or are thinking of buying one, this workshop will provide excellent direction for your future press work. Paul will also share examples from his collection of Vandercook literature.

Best,
Heather

thanks for the heads up! a day in chicago sounds kind of fun:)

on a side note: i am looking to have some screens burned (i have the images, just need someone to burn them onto a screen for me, so i can print them at home). can anyone in this group help me? or, anyone know of a local screen printing company that would just burn the image for me?

thanks.

The CBPA is a good time. Maybe if enough people sign up there could be a car pool? Just an idea. I can't really swing it at this time, but for those of you who may...save on fuel!

As for burning screens...
Mad Town (Baldwin) printing will definitely do it for you. I had them burn some for me in the past.
And I imagine Dorla at Screen Door (Williamson) would as well (I've had her stretch new mesh for me, so I bet they'd do that).

How they'd compare cost-wise, I'm not sure. But they're both good shops to deal with.

Best,
H.
