The Peoples Theatre is looking for input on creative and fun ways to
support the visual and performing arts in and around Anderson County.
This discussion is a great place to add that input. Please post any
thoughts you may have on how we can enrich the lives of our community
members through the arts.

I just want to remind all board members, its membership, and the
general public that The Peoples Theatre Inc. will be more than a Movie
Theater. I spoke with a group of people who didn't want to support
The P.T. Inc. because it was going to be a movie theater so I
explained that the movie theater was just a small part of it. This
facility will be an 'arts & entertainment center. It will include
live entertainment, visual & performing arts events and education, and
host to ongoing visual and performing arts camps and seminars. This
facility will not only serve Anderson County but the surrounding area
and help improve the economic and social development of downtown
Garnett, KS. We hope that it will assist in the revitalization of
downtown Garnett and improve traffic thus helping local businesses.
The movie theater aspect of this facility is a way to support cinema
as an art form and the revenues from it are recognized by the IRS as a
self-sustaining fundraising tool for The P.T. Inc. goals and
objectives. The public needs to be informed of the whole truth when
speaking about it. Not everyone cares about a movie theater, but they
do like live entertainment. The Peoples Theatre Inc. will have
something for everyone and we need to start including the whole
concept at this point. This concept should also be included on its
website.

A member recently suggested to me that we have local performers come
to the monthly movie night. I believe this is a wonderful idea that
we could implement immediately. I have spoke with the members of
Falling Forward (my daughter's vocal trio) and they are willing to
come on 5/30/09 to perform for us. Does any have any other performers
that would like to volunteer to showcase their talents? We could
potentially use this as an audition process for the Cornucopia Tent
acts. I would love to everyone's feedback whether you are a member of
The Peoples Theatre or not.

Why can’t some on these acts be in the Cornucopia Tent and then we can advertise that you can see them perform before our movie night.  Win, Win situation.

How about some of the kids that just do those one/act skits in the drama club, they don't use props in alot of them, just the verbal back and forth, You know I bet you could ask them to volunteer to be in the tent and maybe give them a free pass to movie night....

Helen,

Based on previous experiences with Cornucopia performers we deemed it necessary to screen the talent prior to selecting them to perform.  I like the promotional aspect of your idea – We have some really smart people on the board and in the membership and surely we can develop a way and still not throw out the screening process.

Another area of the arts – Good

We have to find a way to screen these to insure they take it seriously – I think this is the only educational way to do it and insures that there is a standard that has to be met.

Very good.

Hello all
I believe a screening process is a good idea however a lot of
talented people have a very real fear of performing in front of a
large group and because of this their performance may still not be as
good as what you expect. I think you want to be careful about
discouraging people to perform. Sometimes exposure helps them get over
that fear. Just a thought! Cathy
