The Cleveland Community Police Commission officially welcomed Shelly Williams as its new Executive Director today following her swearing-in ceremony at Cleveland City Hall.

Williams previously served as the Commission’s Community Outreach Coordinator and returns to the organization with extensive experience in public affairs and community engagement. As Executive Director, she will oversee daily operations, hire and manage a new team of employees, and lead the development and execution of a strategic plan to advance the Commission’s mission and priorities.

CPC Co-Chair Sharena Zayed praised Williams’ appointment and thanked Mayor Bibb for formally approving her nomination.

“We’re incredibly excited to bring Shelly Williams on board to help lead and guide the CPC. Not only is she an exceptionally skilled, talented, and qualified professional, but she also brings the unique perspective of having previously served the Commission as our Community Outreach Coordinator.

Her commitment to civilian police oversight and its importance in fostering a thriving community is undeniable, and we know that in this expanded role, she will use her knowledge and passion to help us accomplish everything we set out to do — and more. We are grateful to Mayor Bibb for accepting her nomination and appointing her so we can finally get the ball rolling again and continue moving our work forward.”

Williams was nominated for the Executive Director position by the full Commission in October. While CPC committees continued meeting and advancing policy work in recent months, her appointment allows the Commission to move forward in a fully staffed and focused capacity — including finalizing policy initiatives and distributing community grants that were delayed due to the vacancy.

In her first remarks as Executive Director, Williams reaffirmed her commitment to the Commission’s mission.

“I have been a supporter of the CPC and its mission from the very beginning, and I will do everything in my power to help make it successful. There is a lot for me to take on, and I plan to take the time to carefully assess our priorities so we can operate efficiently and effectively. It’s going to be a lot of work, but I’m excited to get started.”

The CPC looks forward to collaborating with Williams as it continues its mission to strengthen accountability, transparency, and public trust in policing and to help build a safer and fairer Cleveland for all.
