🎯 One last push, Cleveland

This is the final day of our spring campaign — and we're so close. We've raised $7,305 toward our $6,000 $8,000 goal, leaving just $695 to go. If you've been meaning to give, now's the moment. Whether it's $5, $25 or $100, your donation — combined with others — can help us reach more Clevelanders with the information they need.

🌧️ Rain with a high of 69

Free, reliable local news exists because neighbors like Julia S., Denise L., Steven H., Bonnie G., Deborah L. and Kerry F. chose to give this weekend. Their generosity keeps information open to everyone in Greater Cleveland. Help carry that forward. Join more than 1,200 supporters. A $5 gift goes a long way.

Good morning Cleveland,

Hundreds of Cleveland educators and district staff learned Friday that their jobs were cut. News of the layoff notices rippled through the district, which will also have 29 fewer schools next year as it reshapes the public school landscape in Cleveland. Staff cuts include teachers, nurses, guidance counselors, colleague and career navigators and aides who specialize in preventing student suspensions. District leaders have not said how many administrative and central office employees will lose their jobs.

CMSD CEO Warren Morgan has said cuts are needed to right size the district due to declining enrollment and budget woes worsened by diminished state funding. Teachers union officials and an increasingly vocal group of parents have argued that there is no current budget shortfall, and that cuts should first come from administrative salaries and six-figure consulting contracts, not front line staff who interact with students and families on a daily basis.

The school board is set to vote on the layoffs Tuesday. The meeting will not include an opportunity for public comment.

Thanks,

Rachel Dissell

🏫 CMSD layoffs: The district started laying off staff, notifying 150 teachers and 120 other unionized staff members that their jobs were cut. CMSD also is reducing administrative staff at the central office but hasn't said how many positions that includes. Read more about the layoffs here.

🚧 Vacant lots in Slavic Village: City Council Member Deborah Gray is working with developers on an apartment complex and other housing ideas for 1,000 vacant lots in Slavic Village. Documenters have more on that and updates coming to Luke Easter Park in these notes from a recent community meeting.

🔌 Power up: Cleveland is preparing a strategic plan for the 120-year-old, city-owned electric utility once known as Muny Light. Cleveland Public Power, as it is now branded, has been in need of an update. Now it appears that a refresh is in store for CPP, although there aren't many details available yet. Nick Castele has the story here.

🚏 Transportation slowdown: The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority will hold hearings this coming week on its plan to cut service to save $2.5 million. The proposed service cuts include the Waterfront Line, the Rapid Transit train that runs from Tower City to the Cleveland Municipal Lot along the lakefront. It has seen so few riders it's known as the ghost train. Learn more about it and the proposed cuts in Weekly Chatter.

🎨 Urban art, a glow-in-the-dark aesthetic and underground hip-hop fuel the Vibe Boost Market, taking over the Negative Space studios this weekend in Asiatown. Gennifer Harding-Gosnell has the details.

Smoke billowed as workers loaded heaps of asphalt at the City of Cleveland's Seville Road service center Friday morning. With the weather warming up, the city is ramping up its efforts to fill potholes on residential streets, said John Laird, who directs the Public Works Department. Repeated thaws and re-freezes this spring hit the roads hard, he said.
