CLEVELAND — CPC Co-Chairs Sharena Zayed and Dr. John Adams will continue in their leadership roles through the end of the year following a vote at Wednesday night’s full Commission meeting.
Commissioner Zayed received eight votes out of a possible 12, while Commissioner Adams received seven of the 12 votes cast.
Zayed and Adams have served as Co-Chairs for the past two years. This will mark their third consecutive term in the role.
“We’re honored to continue serving the citizens of Cleveland in this important capacity,” Adams said. “This latest iteration of the Commission is still quite new, with less than a year of service. There’s still a lot of learning happening as we smooth out the kinks and grow into a more organized and proven entity, so having Sharena and I remain at the helm as the Commission gains confidence makes the most sense. We understand the intricacies of working with the City and the Cleveland Division of Police and have been working tirelessly to build relationships that prioritize Clevelanders and their safety.”
Newly appointed Executive Director Shelly Williams, who previously worked with Zayed and Adams during her time as the Commission’s Community Engagement Coordinator, said their continued leadership will be a major asset.
“I’ve only been in my current position for three weeks,” Williams said. “There’s a lot for me to catch up on, and having two people at my disposal who are not only up to speed but fully dedicated to making this Commission successful is going to help me get there faster. We have a great working relationship, and I’m excited to see how it evolves as we continue our mission to strengthen the CPC’s work for the community.”
In addition to the Co-Chair re-elections, the full Commission unanimously voted to implement changes to the evidentiary procedure manual. The updates were passed by the Rules Committee in December and will now be submitted to the Department of Justice and the Cleveland Monitoring Team for feedback and any additional recommendations.
The next Rules Committee meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, at 6:30 p.m. at the CPC office. The rules meeting originally scheduled for Tuesday, February 10 has been canceled.
