Set in the fictional "Legoland" universe, the single-player mode follows various minifigure characters competing in a racing competition created by a fictional racing champion called Rocket Racer. Players control a minifigure, allowing them to drive a variety of cars built out of Lego and race them against other minifigure characters. Items can be used by the player to hinder other racers' progress, and the player can create their own cars and characters with unlocked Lego bricks and use them to race. A local multiplayer mode also allows multiple players to race against each other.

Lego Racers is a racing game played from a third person perspective. Set in the fictional Legoland universe, the game depicts Rocket Racer, the "greatest racing champion" in Legoland. After becoming bored from beating everyone at racing, he decides to create a racing contest, and finds the best racers in the history of Legoland using a dimensional warp machine created by his friend, Veronica Voltage, a genius scientist and mechanic. The player takes on the hosts and co-racers in circuits of races in an attempt to reach and beat Rocket Racer and become the "Greatest Lego Racer of All Time", completing the game.[11] Each circuit is contested by the player, the host, and four randomly chosen co-racers, and has four tracks. The hosts are, in order, Captain Redbeard, King Kahuka, Basil the Batlord, Johnny Thunder, Baron Von Barron, and Gypsy Moth. In these circuits there are a total of 12 unique tracks; the later three circuits are the first three circuits reversed track-wise with each track now mirrored.

Each of the game's tracks contain power up bricks, which can be collected by the player and used to gain an advantage over other racers. The power ups are divided into four categories: Projectile, Hazard, Shield and Turbo, with each providing a different use to the player. The player can also collect up to three "power plus" bricks, which increase the capability of any power ups collected.[14] Most tracks contain one shortcut that players can use to get ahead of opponents, which are usually either found with careful looking, or accessed using power-ups, mainly Projectile power-ups that destroy part of the scenery.[15] During a race, the in-game HUD displays the player's position, lap number, "lap timers", and a "Power Up Icon" if the player is carrying any power up or power plus bricks. The player can also choose between viewing the "Speedometer", the "Course Map" or the "Close-up Map".[16]

LR2 tried to be a lot more in terms of scope, beyond just "race lego cars around tracks". By that point LEGO had shifted into their current theme model; factions were out, single themes were in. I don't know how much that had to do with the resulting design of the game, but regardless, the direction LR2 took was to completely map out each theme/world into a full place you could explore. And given my tastes, that's a major plus. Collectibles, exploration, characters to talk to, hidden minigames to find, or just cool stuff to see in the world - I greatly enjoyed it. It felt a lot more alive than LR1's sterile "racetracks with themed wallpaper". They also took a lot more freedom with some of the boss races - I loved the race against Riegel's mech. Customization was mixed; the car builder I found much, much more interesting (what with the addition of hovercraft, treaded vehicles, skiing vehicles, etc) but the minifigure customization was far too limited. Music was mostly forgettable. The car destruction system and powerups were a lot of fun - I found knocking out an opponent's car much more satisfying than what LR1's powerups were capable of. It also enabled the addition of the multiplayer battle mode, which I also had fun with.

Almost all tracks have hazards which slow down the player and other racers. They are physical obstructions (giant rolling stones, swinging axes and a falling pillar); hazards which mimic power-ups (cannon fire, falling bombs, electrical discharges, swinging boxes and ground volcanoes which make the player slip and turn, and mummy's curses); or unique hazards (a ghost which spooks the racer and a flying saucer which drags the racer backwards). All hazards can be countered using shields or by avoiding them.

Every track in the Game except the Knightmare-Athon has at least one shortcut. Shortcuts can be open (e.g. a tunnel which turns from the track), hidden (e.g. a tunnel hidden by a waterfall), or can only be blasted open by projectile power-ups (e.g. a passage hidden by barrels). However, all the computer racers (with the exception of Veronica Voltage) ignore them.

For the first time, build your favourite Lego carts on your PC using all of the blocks that are available in real life, thanks to the detailed Creation modes. You can then race your beast against other lego built characters in 12 special themed tracks, based on the Themed Lego kits (including Pirates & Egypt and much more). Race your friend in split screen mode, or go straight on for the ultimate Lego racing trophy.

The four racers from Sandy Bay are Workman Fred, Mike the Postman, Fireman Gavin, and P. C. Bobby. On Dino Island, Mars, and the Arctic, there is a set of opponents you race on the four main levels of each world: Johnny Thunder, Pippin Reed, Mr. Cunningham, Casseopeia, Doc, Mac, and two unnamed characters On Xalax, the racers are Ramas Lightor, Warrior, Shredd, Ghost, Freeze, Chill, and Snake. There are also four Bosses, one for each world: Sam Sanister, Riegel, The Berge, and Rocket Racer.

  • Everyone Is Related: She is the granddaughter of Professor Ignatius Voltage. This would've come full circle in LEGO Racers 2 with Professor Voltage as The Mentor, but he was replaced with Sparky before the game's release.
  • Original Generation: Veronica Voltage is not based upon any physical LEGO minifigure.
  • Racing Ghost: Since she appears in the Time Trials, her car is intangible, unlike all other CPU racers. This means she cannot collide with the player's car, she is immune to red brick powerups, and any powerups she picks up are still available to the player.
  • Superboss: In the main story, she only appears to introduce you to Rocket Racer. The Time Trials are an optional side mode where the player must face her on every racetrack, and she is easily the toughest opponent in the game since she takes advantage of shortcuts and warp powerups.

  • All of the Other Reindeer: Fred is relentlessly mocked by the other Sandy Bay racers (including the player character) for using a Digger as his racecar. He doesn't take it well.
  • Named by the Adaptation: LEGO Racers 2 gives a name to this previously-unnamed construction worker minifigure.

  • Adaptation Dye-Job: The Black Knight had red hair in the Black Knights subtheme of LEGO Castle, but has black hair in LEGO Racers.note While the Black Knight's face cannot be normally seen in-game, the game's files confirm that the Dragon Master head available in the character builder is used by the Black Knight.
  • Adaptation Name Change: In the Dutch version of LEGO Racers, Governor Broadside's Dub Name Change is Kapitein Bakboord. This differs from Governor Broadside and Admiral Woodhouse's names in Netherlands LEGO catalogs: Gouverneur Grootzeil and Admiraal Blaaskaak, respectively.
  • Adapted Out: Baron Rosso does not appear in the Game Boy Advance version of LEGO Racers 2, while Scooter does not appear in the PC/console version.
  • Aliens Speaking English: Warrior is a Rama who speaks perfect English (or Simlish), although he uses a different dialogue track.
  • All There in the Script: The only way you would know the names of Baron Rosso and Frankie Solido is by looking in the game files of LEGO Racers 2, since they are never mentioned in the game itself.
  • Composite Character: "Governor Broadside" is actually combining the name of Governor Broadside (the Imperial Soldiers' leader) and the physical appearance of Admiral Woodhouse (the Imperial Guards' leader). This is carried over from Shop At Home catalogs and Disney Adventures comics, which referred to Woodhouse as Broadside.
  • Demoted to Extra: In LEGO Racers 2, Achu and Slyboots only appear as NPCs during Explore mode, and they no longer partake in races.
  • Dub Name Change: When set to various languages, the first LEGO Racers gives certain characters different names instead of literal translations, with these being some of the most notable cases:
  • Governor Broadside: Governador Flinnnote Governor Flinn (Spanish), Kapitein Bakboordnote Captain Portside (Dutch)
  • Ann Droid: Indradroid (Spanish), Robotina (Dutch)
  • Pharaoh's Mummy: Farao Hoteps Mumienote Pharaoh Hotep's Mummy (Danish)
  • Islander: Uhu (Danish)
  • Royal King: Koning Leeuwenhartnote King Lionheart (Dutch)
  • Commander Cold: Capitán Hielonote Captain Ice (Spanish), Capitano Ghiaccionote Captain Ice (Italian), Ijskapiteinnote Ice Captain (Dutch)
  • Achu: Tempelkoningnote Temple King (Dutch)
  • Willa the Witch: Heksen Hylianote Hylia the Witch (Danish), Hella de Heksnote Hella the Witch (Dutch)
  • Sam Sinister: Slyboots (Danish), Sluwe Samnote Sly Sam (Dutch)
  • Blackjack Hawkins: Barbanegranote Blackbeard (Spanish), Jack il Falconote Jack the Falcon (Italian)
  • Alpha Dragonis: Dragon Alfanote Dragon Alpha (Italian), Chamon (Danish)
  • Nova Hunter: Aramis la Cazadoranote Aramis the Huntress (Spanish)
  • Gail Storm: Tormentosanote Stormy (Spanish)
  • The Generic Guy: Ann Droid, Islander, Willa the Witch and Gail Storm all use carbon copies of Black Knight's racing car, for some reason. Everyone else gets their personal custom car in the first LEGO Racers.
  • Go-Karting with Bowser: Willa the Witch, Sam Sinister, Alpha Dragonis, Black Knight, and Mr. Cunningham are all villains who partake in this friendly racing championship.
  • Humanoid Aliens: Unlike the later Martians, Alpha Dragonis has a standard minifigure build like all other Zotaxians, although his face is considerably more alien-looking than Gypsy Moth's face.
  • Named by the Adaptation: The generic unnamed Islander is named Uhu in the Danish version.
  • No Name Given:
  • King Richard is only identified as the "Royal King" and Cannonball Cordoba/Don Diego de LEGO/Sergeant Speedy is only called "The Admiral" in LEGO Racers. The Islander and Black Knight are also left unnamed, though to be fair, they had no names in the original lines.
  • Two characters in the second game (Frankie Solido and Baron Rosso) aren't named in the game, as they only show up as racers and never in explore mode as someone you can talk to. The only way you'd be able to know is by hacking into the game files.
  • Non-Indicative Name: Blackjack Hawkins' Spanish name translates to "Blackbeard", but he actually has a grey beard.
  • Original Generation: Although loosely inspired by the LEGO Town theme, Frankie Solido and Baron Rosso are original to LEGO Racers 2 and are not based upon any toyline characters.
  • Pirate: Blackjack Hawkins is a pirate from the LEGO Pirates theme.
  • Previous Player-Character Cameo: Scooter is one of the default playable characters in LEGO Racers, and returns as an opponent racer in the GBA version of LEGO Racers 2.
  • Secret Character: Using a Classic Cheat Code, you can play as Cassiopeia on any Mars race.
  • Sharp-Dressed Man: Sam Sinister/Slyboots, Baron Rosso, and Frankie Solido wear fashionable suits even while competing in high-octane races.
  • She's a Man in Japan: Nova Hunter's Dub Name Change in Spanish is "Aramis la Cazadora", which translates to "Aramis the Huntress".
  • Spell My Name With An S:
  • Rob N. Hood has his name written as "Rob-N-Hood".
  • Black Jack Hawkins has his name written as "Blackjack Hawkins".
  • Alpha Draconis has his name spelled "Alpha Dragonis", although it is spelled correctly in the Dutch version.
  • Pippin Reed has her name spelled "Pippin Read" in the GBA version of LEGO Racers 2. In the PC/console verison, her surname simply isn't mentioned.
  • Sudden Name Change: In LEGO Racers 2, Sam Sinister and Gail Storm were renamed Slyboots and Pippin Read, respectively. Though, in the Danish version, this is averted by Slyboots, since that was what he was called in the first game.
  • Vocal Dissonance: The first game mixed up the voices of dang near every opponent (the PC version, for example, gets exactly one of the twenty-three opponents). While Rob-N-Hood speaking with the voice of Captain Redbeard isn't much of a deal, hearing Willa the Witch Talk Like a Pirate in the grumpy voice of Blackjack Hawkins is all kinds of wrong.
  • You Don't Look Like You: The Black Knight is a character from the Black Falcons and Black Knights subthemes of LEGO Castle, but he looks almost completely different in LEGO Racers due to using minifigure pieces from Dragon Masters and Fright Knights instead.
