The university was founded in 1974 by Williams as "Life Chiropractic College"[1] on the site of a placer gold mine, next to Southern Technical Institute (later Southern Polytechnic State University and now Kennesaw State University - Marietta Campus). 22 students attended the first classes in January 1975.[2]

In March 2004, Guy Riekeman, the former chancellor of the Palmer Chiropractic University System, was appointed as the president of Life University.[2] In 2017, Rob Scott took over as president of the university and Riekeman became chancellor.[3]

The university is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate, bachelor, master's and doctoral degrees.[4] The doctoral degree program is also accredited by the Council on Chiropractic Education.[5] Two programs in dietetics are accredited by the American Dietetic Association.[6]

Recognizing that well-balanced students are infinitely more prepared for life after college, Life University offers opportunities for student involvement, for students to express themselves, contribute to their talents and develop new friendships and relationships both on campus and in the community.

In conjunction with this commitment is the inherent responsibility for preventing or minimizing any danger to life and/or property resulting from the effects of an emergency. When an emergency occurs, an immediate organized response by University personnel is activated. The Life University Emergency Action Plan (EAP) established the framework within which the University will provide this response. The purpose of this EAP is to define procedures for responding to specific types of emergencies on the LIFE campus.

We understand that the nervous system coordinates all body function and controls how each of us adapts to our environment. Interferences to the nervous system result in malfunction, diseases and infirmities, and reduced quality of life. These interferences manifest themselves in three major categories: physical traumas, environmental toxins and emotional stresses.

The University of New Haven is the only private college or university in the state whose campus police department has earned Tier I accreditation from the State of Connecticut Police Officer Standards and Training Council.

The Stephen C. O'Connell Center covers three acres and is used by the university for classes, intercollegiate sports, general recreation, and a variety of other entertainment events. An Olympic-sized swimming pool, dance studio, gymnastics studio, martial arts room, free style weight room, Nautilus center, track, badminton, volleyball courts, and practice basketball court are located in and around the perimeter of the 12,000-seat main arena. The versatility of this facility permits as many as eight recreational activities to be conducted simultaneously. All recreational, educational and entertainment facilities within the O'Connell Center have been designed to accommodate persons with disabilities.

UFID is an eight-digit number that serves as the primary identifier for all university records and transactions. Like a social security number, no two people will have the same number, and each person has only one. The UFID is assigned by the university, not chosen like a PIN. All students, faculty and staff have UFIDs, and the number is printed on the Gator 1 card.

Freshmen entering the university will be offered a housing agreement based on the term they were admitted. Residence hall contracts are available for the academic year (Summer B/Fall/Spring, Fall/Spring, Spring/Summer, and the Summer terms).

The UF Welcome Center is within the main UF Bookstore next to the Reitz Union. The Welcome Center is maintained by the Office of Admissions and is the university's front door to visitors, providing weekday and Saturday information sessions and walking tours of campus.
