Hi TOLers,

We are moving the location of our group to Kathy Hamlin’s home on 807 Stoddard, on the corner of Stoddard and Northpath because I have been super sick all week and don’t want you all sitting in my germs Friday night!  I am doing a bit better now on antibiotics (ear infection), but the influenza symptoms are still lingering.

We will start promptly at 7:30 with prayer, reading, discussion and closing in prayer at 9:15.  We need to wrap up by 9:30 though.  Let Sarah know if you can bring a snack too!

Let’s have Elisha read beginning of Chapter 2-“more basic and realistic”, then Virgil read “this he will probably” to “”nothing is obligatory at all,” then Sarah read “To some it will appear” to “try eating bricks and centipedes instead”, then Mark “Those who understand the spirit of the Tao” to the chapter end.

For those reading, don’t worry about flubbing a word, just go with it, don’t correct yourself, or reflect mid sentence- just keep reading.  And if you don’t want to read, find someone at group who will take your section for you :) I will bring my copy of the book with the sections marked off.  I didn’t go by page numbers because we all have different publications of the book.

Okay, I am excited to see you all!  Come a bit early if you want more fellowship and food time :)

Hugs,
Bethany

P.S. We will have one more night of Abolition of Man- how many of you would be interested in Thanksgiving leftovers and a reading on next Friday?  I will let the numbers decide, don’t want to exclude folks from our group that really want to finish the book together.

Take a "letter" from C.S. Lewis' Letters to Malcolm Chiefly on Prayer.

Rez friends,

I have the amazing privilege of leading a minimum of six devotionals each week for my incredible students. I’m seeking ideas from friends in an effort to add richness and variety to these devotionals.

I would be grateful to hear about literature that has meaningfully touched your life, or just something cool you run across as you go through the day. Recommendations could be derived from a book, scripture, poetry, philosophy, etc. (Brian-I recently heard of a professor tying Star Trek to scripture during a devotional!). I’m truly open to any suggestions!

“Study simply cannot happen until we are willing to be subject to the subject matter.  We must submit to the system.  We must come as student, not teacher.  Not only is study directly dependent upon humility, but it is conducive to it.  Arrogance and a teachable spirit are mutually exclusive.”  - Richard Foster

"He that studies only men, will get the body of knowledge without the soul; and he that studies only books, the soul without the body.  He that to what he sees, adds observation, and to what he reads, reflection, is in the right road to knowledge, provided that in scrutinizing the hearts of others, he neglects not his own."  - Caleb Colton

Here are some great devotionals:

Brother Lawrence
St. Terese of Liseux

Great literature for musing:

try:
Flannery O’Connor
Lauren Winner
Frederica Matthews Green
Madeline L’Engle

You could also lead them in morning prayer- Dr. Barwegen did that this past week, it was really cool, from the Book of Common Prayer.  Or you could sing a hymn and discuss the composer.  Or what about a saint or church father/mother that is interesting to you. Mother Teresa!

Love,
Bethany

P.S. Esther mentioned some great authors too one night... but I am blanking on their names!

Hi Elisha,

My personal favorites are:

Waiting on God - Andrew Murray (30-day cycle)
Daily Light - short (1 paragraph) compilations of scripture, one for
morning and one for evening (365 days)
