Hi all,

I have had several replies to this but you're all WAY ahead of me tech wise.
This is what I need to know.......

If I but the £39.99 cd-r/w that computer centre are selling and plug it into
my old 33 mps secondary IDE port as a slave, will I be able to use it as a
storage device. I run Win 95, have a P200 with 2.25GB hard drive (hence the
need for storage). On the box the drive comes in it says it requires Windows
2000 or XP, but it's an IDE drive right?

After that, with I then be able to use it to master music I have written
myself with outboard MIDI gear and Cubase so I can play it on other peoples
CD players or more appropriately in my car. .

I hope having worded it like this someone will sense my technical level and
help me with an answer I can understand!

It's an IDE device. So it should show up even in W95 as a CD reader.

To WRITE a CD requires a special program. If the manufacturers say
the program they provide requires W2K or XP, you must believe them.

When we were all using computers of this sort of power, reliable CD
writers were invariably scsi devices. Today's IDE units are very
good, but you're grossly underpowered for running one.

You could get a nice big hard drive for around the same price :-)

........which won't run on my system because they all come with 40 pin ATA66
connections and I have a 20 pin ATA33 IDE bus!

Thanks for the reply though!

Ignore that - it only made sense on one thread!

While the drive would probably work, the software will not.

I don't know if Plextor has an outlet in GB but if they do it would be
wise to check out their refurbished line. These are great drives and
can be purchased inexpensively. I prefer the 8/4/32 or 10/4/32
Plexwriters, I have two of them and have never burned a bad disk.
