I mean really, why has this show seemingly fallen off the radar of the collective anime community? Back when I first watched it, it was legit the first time I ever watched a show start to finish in one sitting. It didn't strike me as bad back then, in fact I'd say even now it's a pretty good show (granted it's taken with both of the sequel movies). Yet a quick search on this subreddit shows pretty sparse discussion on the series, most of it pretty spread out over time. So I figured I'd try and get at least a few people interested in a show that was a pretty formative experience for me as an anime fan.
On December 27th, the complete anime series EDEN OF THE EAST (?????, Higashi no Eden, 2009) will be released in a 4-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack by FUNimation Entertainment. Produced by anime studio Production I.G. (GHOST IN THE SHELL, KILL BILL VOL. 1), the show was created, written and directed by Kenji Kamiyama (director of MORIBITO: GUARDIAN OF THE SPIRIT and the best-selling GHOST IN THE SHELL: STAND ALONE COMPLEX), and features character designs by manga artist Chica Umino (Honey and Clover). Akira Takizawa wakes up naked outside the White House with no memories. He`s got a gun in one hand and a cell phone in the other, and he doesn`t know if he`s a good guy or one of the worst. He doesn`t remember that the phone gives him instant access to ten billion yen and a woman who can make his most outlandish requests a reality. He doesn`t recall his connection to the ongoing missile attacks terrorizing the Japanese people, or the part he played in the sudden disappearance of 20,000 shut-ins. He doesn`t even remember he`s supposed to save Japan and will be murdered if he fails. Whatever it is he`s tangled up in, Takizawa`s definitely in deep - and that`s not even scratching the surface. The EDEN OF THE EAST Complete Series Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack contains all 11 episodes. While it quickly became apparent that we were thrown into the middle of a series, with some patience we could pick up on enough of what was going on, but the films are by no means meant to stand alone. We should have read the plot summary of the television series before going in. So check out the Wiki plot section before watching this film (or hunt down the tv series), because I recommend watching East of Eden: The King of Eden regardless of having the beginning and real ending. Why? No, not so you might share in our sufferings. It is because the animation is just that good. It is gorgeous. I really loved the way it was put together, the composition and sequences and the painstaking rendering of the cityscape. The characters are greate, the story is compelling, and I am completely intrigued.
Note:There is some criticism that should tantalize most of you, an accusation that this series reads straight from a Robert Ludlum (of Bourne series) novel. One you could watch with your middle-graders and up (can vouch for the film at least).
The anime was great i loved the openings and the endings. I didnt like the jhonny parts. But the series overall wasreally good and enjoyable.
*spoiler* it ends with a uncompleted love story :o *spoiler*
I really loved the concept of this series.
Watched the first movie that goes with it, but haven't watched the second yet as I've read it's prettymuch just a recap of the series. I am looking forward to the third one (I belive that there is one to come), tocomplete the whole series.
