Hi Landon,

I can't remember if we've met at USENIX but it's not impossible - I
was hanging out with the Sun contingent at most USENIX Security
colloquiums from 1993-2000ish, but haven't been back for quite a
while. It's a pity, I really liked the USENIX crowd, but Sun just
wasn't willing to fund me to do that - however, I'm now a free agent,
so instead it's personal budget which stops me attending. :-)

The reason I am writing is that I just read this:

http://futurity.org/society-culture/giving-away-privacy-by-sharing-online/

...and, cutting a long story short, I was wondering if you had
encountered an F/OSS that I've been contributing to for the past
couple of years, "The Mine! Project"?

If not, I commend to you the Google TechTalk videos that Adriana Lukas
(project designer) and I did, earlier this year, embedded on:

http://themineproject.org/about/

...because the Mine! seems to have considerable overlap with what I
understand of your goals from "Virtual Individual Server" article --
plus our development plans (not in the videos) *also* cover P2P and
secure cloud-like storage.

We've been through a prototype and are now implementing the first
Mine, and shall be building other applications on top of it. The work-
in-progress is up on GoogleCode:

http://code.google.com/p/pymine/

Perhaps you/your students would be interested in participating in Mine-
related discussion - and/or vice-versa?
