One startling observation that we could make out the media reportage is that medical devices market is governed by an archaic Drugs and Cosmetic Act 1940!
As Express reports, the other pitfall of the existing market situation is that despite an estimated 5,000 medical devices being sold in the country — ranging from bone caps, metallic prosthesis, fallopian rings to catheter guide wires — the categories of medical devices “notified” and, therefore, regulated number only 23.
We therefore are asking the governments to come out with a comprehensive, deterrent and effective regulatory system for drugs and devices on the lines of RERA.
Just look at this astounding piece of data: In India, there are an estimated 1.2 lakh knee replacement and around 70,000 hip replacement surgeries annually.
AIIMS alone conducts over 1,500 hip and knee replacement surgeries – 20 per cent of them are revision surgeries. An implant lasts for at least 10 years. But due to surgical errors, many patients have to undergo revision surgery within months… 80 per cent of these surgeries are because of surgical errors, mostly to correct faulty hip implants.
