For some reason, this collection seems to not include MIT affiliated Fab Labs. It seems to absurd to leave them out....

The list of known Fab Labs can be found at:

http://wiki.fablab.is/wiki/Portal:Labs

Someone can probably automatically merge this into themakermap.

I note that you might get input from:

http://www.fabfolk.com/

One more thing: the form for adding a space forced me to choose 'hackerspace', 'makerspace', etc. Perhaps 'fab lab', and 'public library' would be added to that list.

I would also like to see public library added to the list of available checkboxes. Libraries are an invaluable resource for hackers and makers alike, just as much as finding a parts supplier or a space to create.

I disagree with adding libraries as a separate checkbox.  I love libraries and totally agree that they are invaluable resources, but there are so many libraries it might really clutter up the map.  And there are already plenty of ways to search libraries.  At the same time, a library that has some kind of makerspace inside or holds a lot makerspace type events or is a speciality tech library should be included, but not necessarily under their own checkbox.  I do think the checkbox system is a little limiting, so maybe a way to use tagging instead of the checkboxes might help.... hmm i've almost talked myself out of my own disagreeing.

We switched from loose tagging (at the discretion of the person entering the space) to checkboxes because tagging was generating dozens of ways of saying the same thing and resulted in clutter.

Thanks for sending over the list of Fab Labs; it's not as easy as a simple merge b/c it looks like most of the addresses aren't actual addresses, but I'll look into it.

Fred,

I think behind the scenes the check boxes are working like tags. When I entered a few items, they receives multiple check boxes, for instance of a shop was retail and provided textiles and plastics.

This would also work with the library idea, plus if the map is cluttered, you can always uncheck boxes to narrow your search while leaving everything on in areas that are not densely packed.

My policy is always to collect more data if its available and clean, and let the user decide whether or not they need it.

Does anyone know of a national-scale library databases that might help automate the collection of clean data?

indeed ... there is already a scraperwiki set up that reads the http://wiki.fablab.is/wiki/Portal:Labs list -- so how do you guys want to include the fab labs? (probably quickest growing group in the area)
