Here's a few authors I enjoy:

Sean McMullen
Neil Gaiman
Peter David
Terry Pratchett

The most recent book I read and really liked:

"The Raw Shark Texts" by Steven Hall

Other books you may enjoy:

"His Dark Materials" (collection) by Phillip Pullman
"Villains by Necessity" by Eve Forward
The first book of Mercedes Lackey's "Bedlam's Bard" series -- I don't
like a lot of Lackey's work, but I like that one.
"How Much for Just the Planet" by John M. Ford

Happy to..

Mainly, all I can add here, is The Coldfire Trilogy by C.S. Friedman.
It sports the best Anti-hero in literature history, and some of the
best descriptions and rationale for a magic system I've read in years.

Trust me, The Fae is a terrifying energy source. It works using the
human brain's thought process as a catalyst, but only what the most
prominent emotion at the time of access. Thus, if you're filled with
fear over the spell going wrong, it will, just off of the fear running
though your brain.
