;-)
i am also a "newbie"...i plan to begin magickal ritual in 2 or 3
months, after i have got my real life more organized and begin
meditation...
anyway i have been looking through my books for the best guide to
start...i have been thinking "The Magick of Aleister Crowley" by
DuQuette, something by Gareth Knight, Regardie's "The Golden Dawn",
Donald Tysons "The Magicians Workbook", David Conway's "Magic: an
occult primer", all seem promising....what do you think out of those..?
do you have any other recommendations..?
perhaps i should begin with learning certain skills instead of straight
into magickal ritual etc..? such as astral projection, aura
perception, energy-feeling awareness and control, magick mirror
perception..etc..
does aleister crowley have any texts on prerequisite
practices/attainments to magickal work...? maybe something like "Liber
E"...
another thing i was wondering about is whether, especially for thelemic
ritual, an outdoor magickal area would do..? i have no space in our
house or shed, so have been thinking about going into the bushland
nearby and looking for an outdoor space...
i will probably begin with bought tools and eventually go on to making
my own. if i can find some instructions on how i will try to make the
altar.
the only way i can communcate with peers or find guidance on this
subject is online so i am also considering joining the O.T.O. in our
state, or some other organization like the rosicrucians/a.m.o.r.c. or a
smaller group.
thanks for reading..!

Why wait?!
Saying "Will" before meals is a ritual.
<http://www.egnu.org/thelema/index.php/Saying_Will>
Greeting the sun (per Liber Resh) is a ritual.
<http://www.thelemapedia.org/index.php/Liber_Resh>
LBRP is a must-know ritual, perfect for honing your basic skills.

Personally, I find that postponing effort based on XYZ preconditions
(i.e., were I to say "No ritual work until I've mastered astral
projection!") is indicative of hesitancy somewhere else in my
personality.
DuQuette's book is pretty good, but Crowley's Book IV is perhaps the
best starting point (also contains very specific altar creation
instructions, which I've been meaning to use for about 15 years
now...).
Regarding indoor/outdoor suitability: it's YOU who create and
consecrate ritual space. A Burger King parking lot will do, so long as
you're focused and determined.
If you want to learn secret handshakes and enjoy infighting between
cliques of posers who all think they're somehow better than each other,
by all means join a magickal lodge. If you want to obtain the knowledge
and conversation of your Holy Guardian Angel, practice!
As crazy Uncle Al might say, Aum-HA!
[caveat: I like to think that not all magickal lodges are full of
pretentious idiots; perhaps, someday, I will have an experience to
bolster this hope. So far all my encounters with the OTO and other
groups, with the notable exception of the good folks at College of
Thelema, have undermined that hope.]

May what you have to do be exactly what you want to do.

thanks. the last one is the one i was thinking to start with.

well yes and i think there's good reason.
im not the most stable person and dont want to release any dangerous
energies by accident or something. magick can be dangerous can't it?
i think even crowley said magick should ideally be left until you have
attained samadhi! tho he knew that was unlikely.
the other reason is just all the preparation will take me that long
probably. the stuff that requires a circle/altar/tools/etc anyhow.

can i follow it without worrying about crowleys dangerous little jokes
i've heard so much about?
i had a copy years ago and burnt it along with many others because i
was becming obsessed and i couldn't imagine what my life would be like
without all the crap i'd read filling my head every day. and i had a
dream of crowley that night .. he was outside the house and looking
around and told me "you don't have any more demons". he looked very
tired.
but now i have book 4 again. i'll check the altar section out, i
thought it wasn't that detailed but maybe im wrong.

it can help to know people on the same path so i dont go off the deep
end... although if they are off the deep end themselves i'd be even
worse off than alone perhaps. but i feel i could use them even if they
were.

i suspected it would be near impossible to find a really good group.
this is the oto site for australia: http://www.otoaustralia.org.au/
do you know of any good groups online? like at groups.yahoo.com or
something like that...

where did you begin in magick..?
thanks heaps
> im not the most stable person
Ahh. Liber XXX: Liber Librae says:
"Learn first -- Oh thou who aspirest unto our ancient Order! -- that
Equilibrium is the basis of the Work. If thou thyself hast not a sure
foundation, whereon wilt thou stand to direct the forces of Nature?"

I don't know about "following". Reading it was helpful to me.
> Which lineage of that group would you be speaking of?
I won't dishonor those who invited me to meet their cohorts by
identifying the specific subjects of my flippant remark, above. It
wasn't the lineage(s) which I found problematic; it was the squabbling
and petty one-upmanship. I'm sure there are many fine conventicles out
there.
Enjoy!
