I wonder if there are others in Somerset West who feel the same way
that I do about the selling of products at traffic lights.
I have no issue with the actual selling or marketing of bits and
pieces but not at busy intersections.
I would be interested to learn how much damage is caused to the
individuals that stand in the road from poisonous gasses emitted by
car exhausts. There is also the danger of the hawkers getting knocked
over and also the hazards that drivers face dodging these chaps.
I do not understand how the local traffic authorities turn a blind eye
to this situation. When I last read the rules of the road, they stated
quite clearly that pedestrians are not allowed to walk on or next to
the freeways. The N2 is a freeway.
Why can these hawkers not be sheperded to a quiter location, perhaps
the pullover areas near the intersections, like down at the Broadway /
Victoria Str intersection.
I believe that in the town of George, local residents kicked up enough
of a fuss about this problem that traffic authorities put an end to
robot retail.
Could we do the same? Is there anyone else who agrees? Are there other
voices to add to mine?
I will personally approach the local traffic people and see if I can
affect a change in this situation.
My aim is to make the roads safer for all of us. I believe that the
ingestion of carbon monoxide and other harmful gasses ingested by the
hawkers will be reduced if they are moved away from the intersections.
The oppurtunity for criminals to break into vehicles at the lights
will be greatly reduced if authorities are there to monitor
activities.
