Hello all!
I teach 9th graders Tech/Art at the Science Leadership Academy's new Beeber campus in West Philadelphia. One of the unique features of our school (aside from its focus on project-based learning) is our Wednesday mini-courses. Every Wednesday, from 1:30-3:00pm our students participate in mini-courses on a variety of topics. Each mini-course lasts 8 weeks (8 sessions).
Our next round of mini-courses begins December 4th and we want to pull together a series of "Maker" influenced workshops to help foster the Maker community we are working on building within the school. The idea is to offer a different workshop each week so kids can be exposed to and gain skills and knowledge in a variety of areas. They would then be able to continue working on any projects they like in what we're calling "The Studio."
So, in short, we are looking for folks who would be willing to volunteer to run an hour and a half long workshop with 8-10 ninth graders on any of these topics:
- Caine's Arcade (building and inventing with cardboard)
- Electronics (I'm thinking something simple like Little Bits)
- E-Textiles (i.e. adding LEDs using a Lilpad Pixel Board to some clothing)
- CAD/3-D Modeling (i.e. TinkerCad) and printing!! (we have a brand new 3D printer!)
- anything else that you may be able to offer
At this point we are working on some fundraising to purchase materials for these workshops.
Please reply here or contact me directly at mhertz at slabeeber dot org.
Thanks so much!
Mary Beth
