#Event Proposal:
Saturday April 20th is Hardware Freedom Day. It's also opening day for Philly Tech week. I can do an event that day if The Hacktory approves, and has someone open the space. This would be a Hardware Freedom Day event, but could be cross-posted as a Philly Tech Week event to get wider coverage.
#Event Timeline:
11- 12: Why Open Hardware Matters' talk. What is Open Source? What is hardware freedom? DCMA, lock-in and other things that prevent hardware freedom.
12 - 13: Lunch Break, and discussion
13 - 15: Open Hardware Open House. Bring your favorite Open Hardware to demo and show. Or show up and check out what Open Hardware projects people in Philadelphia are working on.
Open House is a hands-on session, and will include soldering irons, wire, components, and electronics tools will be available.
# Gear and Staff Requests
- Projector and laptop cord
- Soldering irons, etc for hand on section
- a greeter (11 - 1) and a Teacher Assistant (1 to 3) for the event
#Event PR/Post/Press:
====
Hardware Freedom day is a celebration of Open Source hardware, and a reminder how many crazy 'ownership' rules we allow on our digital devices. How would you feel if If you 'owned' a car but couldn't look under the hood, or drive it on certain streets? Or how about 'owning' a book, but having it illegal to loan to a friend, or read in the bathroom? Most americans wouldn't put up with that kind of 'ownership' of physical goods, but we do put up with that kind of crazy ownership of electronics and hardware.
- 11AM to 12PM: Come by for our 'Why Open Hardware Matters' talk with Far McKon if you want to learn what Open Hardware is all about.
- 12PM to 1PM: Drop by and have some food and discussion during Open Hardware Lunch fans if you just want to meet people.
- 1PM to 3PM: If you are a Open Hardware hacker/builder, or want to become one, stop by from work on Open Hardware projects.
Remember: If you can't open it, if you can't fix, or can't share it; you don't really own it.
=====
Who approves this kind of thing? Can someone in The Hacktory post it, and/or submit it to Philly Tech Week (PTW)?
hack on,
- Far McKon
