Hey guys,

Wanted to toss out a rule change proposal.  As you'll recall, any changes at this point won't take effect until 2018 unless we pass it with all 14 members voting in favor.

So, every year we get into an increasing arms race close to the trade deadline.  I like that the league allows struggling teams a chance to get better for next year.  But I'd like to find a way to reel that in a little so we don't end up with teams that have a roster better than you'd find in a 10 team league just because someone is able to trade a ton the week before the playoffs.  I don't know what the perfect answer is but here's my proposal:

I propose we institute a salary cap of $300 (I'm open to other opinions here) so there is some limit on the amount of talent a team can acquire outside of the draft and free agency.  This is pretty easily tracked through the same Current Rosters spreadsheet we already use.  It would take some checking when trades occur for the guys who were added via free agency, but not very onerous work.

An easy example is my current roster where my total salary is $371.  I'd have to go back through the timing of everything to know for sure, but in all likelihood this would mean I wouldn't have been able to trade for Antonio Brown last year.  He has a price tag of $109 and would've put me over the cap when I traded for him.

One variant of this is to have a cap but make it more of a soft cap where we have a luxury tax.  So you can go over the cap but you either pay actual dollars into the league slush fund for beer at the draft, etc. or maybe pay like $13 draft dollars that get split evenly to the rest of the league or something like that.

Thoughts? Concerns?  You guys want to vote on it?

I think its a good idea. It would help prevent seasoned members from "buying" their advantage without paying a premium for it. While protecting newer members who aren't as experienced with this custom league.
