Ready… or Not ?
An assessment of Kenya’s preparedness for the August 2017 General Election

Date: Tuesday, 16 May 2017
Time: 8:00 am to 12:30 pm
Venue: Nairobi Safari Club, Lillian towers, University Way

Dear Friends/Colleagues/Partners,

Kenyans for Peace with Truth and Justice (KPTJ) and the Africa Centre for Open Governance (AfriCOG) are launching the latest report in their series, “Ready Or Not,” which began before the 2013 elections to assess electoral preparedness. AfriCOG and KPTJ are also members of the Kura Yangu Sauti Yangu (KYSY) electoral platform, which actively monitors the electoral process, engages key stakeholders and facilitates dialogue to promote credible elections.

As the country now prepares for elections in August 2017, it is important to evaluate what has changed since 2013 and to identify where problems remain.

This will be the first of several planned reports assessing readiness for the 2017 General Election. Future editions will cover later phases of the electoral cycle, including election campaigns, election day, counting and results, dispute resolution, and an overall assessment of the administration of the General Elections.

Areas covered in this analysis include a review and assessment of the context in which elections are being held, the legal framework, leadership and integrity, the electoral system, electoral management, voter education, experiences with procurement of systems, voter registration, the audit of the voters’ register, gender parity and enforcement of laws.

Several speakers will present on these different aspects, focusing on those issues that we view to be the most critical and urgent at this time.
Speakers include:
  •          George Kegoro, Executive Director, Kenya Human Rights Commission
  •          Willis Otieno, Advocate
  •          Tirop Kitur, Field Director, InformAction
  •          Grace Maingi, Executive Director, URAIA (tbc)
  •          Waikwa Wanyoike, Executive Director, Katiba Institute
We look forward to welcoming you there.
