Prayer Focus
"Don't be afraid of opposition. Remember, a kite rises against not
with the wind" (Hamilton Wright Mabie). It is strange to say we
should welcome, even want some opposition. Without it we will never
rise up or move on. What's the use of having a kite if we don't fly
it; and the kite needs contrary winds in order to fly. Strangely, it
was the opposition of the giant Goliath that taught David how to rely
more on God. It was this battle that solidified that David had the
soul of a champion and that he would not be intimidated by a giant.
"And David said to Saul, let no man's heart fail because of him: your
servant will go and fight with this giant" (I Sam. 17:32).
The battle with Goliath was a key element on how David was known in
Israel. "And the women answered one another as they prayed and said...
David slain his ten thousands" (I Sam. 18:10). Even David and
Israel's enemies knew David by his battle with Goliath. "And the
servants of Achish said unto him, is not this David the king of the
land? Did they not sing one to another of him in dances, saying...David
slain his ten thousands" (I Sam. 21:11)? David's public visibility
as a champion was not solely popularity, but was also respect. They
admired, honored and esteemed him because he did not fear the enormity
of the situation. Comparatively, David was like Michael Jordan who
was not afraid to take the last shot at the end of the game; or Tiger
Woods who is not intimidated to hit the winning putt on the 18th hole,
or even more seriously like the young men and women of the American
Armed forces who face deadly situations daily in the Middle east.
How will people know us? Will we be known as people who ran away from
challenges and opposition? Will we be known as people who allowed
giants or gigantic situations to make us stagger at God's promises or
God's purpose? Will we be known as people who own a kite and never
flew it? Let's decide that we want the soul of a champion and we will
not run or hide when conflict, combat or contention comes. We will
put on the whole armour of God and stand our position against the
giants and the gigantic issues (Eph. 6:13b-14).
Prayer
God we are most appreciative that you grant us with a name. As you
told Abraham that you would make his name great (Gen. 12:2), you have
also given us that privilege. We don't have to make a name for
ourselves like the people in Genesis 11:4. We do not have to get a
name by being disobedient or disrespectful to your will. We can trust
you for our destiny and purpose and believe in you like David did.
And as you blessed David taking him from the sheepcote to being a
king, and as you gave him a name, you will do the same for us (2 Sam.
7:8).
Thank you for being with us whithersoever we have gone, and thank you
for cutting off our enemies and removing them from our sight (2 Sam.
7:9). Our name is great because of you and the strength you have
given us to fight the giants in our lives. With you we are not afraid
of the enormity of any situation. You never let our enemy triumph
over our souls. You never make any one ashamed who wait and trust in
you (Ps. 25:2-3). We seek you for every victory and the strategy to
fight our enemies. You make us lift our heads over our enemies (Ps.
24:6-7).
You are our King of Glory, you are strong and mighty, you are the
everlasting door (Ps. 24:7-10). You are the praise of glory! Even
when people want to acknowledge us we will never take the glory. You
allowed us to win battle after battle. You alone are the reason for
our successes and our conquests, whatever we have achieved is because
of you. We belong to your army and soldier can never be greater the
captain of the host. We honor your majesty (Joshua 5:14-15). We wear
your armour. It is your shield of faith that blocks the arrows of the
devil. It is your helmet of salvation that guards our minds from
troublesome thought. It is your sword of the spirit that cuts and
wounds the enemies' ego. It is your belt of truth that protects us
from the lies of the enemy (Eph. 6:10-18). We simply would be nothing
and lost without you. We are known because of your interaction in our
lives (II Sam. 7:9-10). So Lord, we praise you and we thank you that
our heart has never failed or became scared because of our enemies (I
Sam. 17:32). We are able and will be able to overcome with you (Num.
13:30).
In Jesus' name.
Amen
