 THOUGHT

Keep Learning

The moment learning
to learn ends is
the moment ignoring
of ignorance begins.

Lamp & Ginger 灯姜

杨岐灯盏明千古,
宝寿生姜辣万年。

— 佛门对联

Yángqí’s oil lamp is bright
for a thousand ages,
Bǎoshòu's raw ginger is spicy
for ten thousand years.

— Buddhist Couplet

Note: As Dharma Master Yángqí did not use even a drop of the monastery's oil for illumination of his personal matters, and as Dharma Master Bǎoshòu did not give even a piece of ginger from the monastery's kitchen, even to the Abbot's attendant for his personal use (when sick without payment), their cases became lasting excellent examples, of stringent upholding of the Precepts.

Is It Alright To ‘Revise’ Buddhist Sūtras?
Question: Is it alright to ‘revise’ or ‘edit’ a scripture taught by the Buddha or another Buddhist enlightened being? Answer: ‘Revision’ should never be done ‘on behalf’ of the enlightened. For example, if you have written a book, and someone changes its contents without your permission, surely, you will no longer consider it to be written by you. [...]
