Computer Crimes
========================
Unfortunately, criminals also profit from the computer revolution. Here
are some common computer crimes.
==========
Viruses:-
==========
Viruses are programs which are written deliberately to damage data.
They are written to hide themselves in the computer and spread from one
to another through a network or on floppy disks. Anti-virus programs
can help to protect computers from viruses.
Some harmless viruses are written just to annoy people. For instance,
some write irritating messages on your screen. Others are more serious
and can destroy all your data. When the Cascade virus attacks, all the
letters in a file fall into a heap at the bottom of the screen. It
looks spectacular, but it's not very funny when it's your file!
=========================
The Michelangelo Virus:-
=========================
The Michelangelo virus was programmed to become active on March 6,
1992, the 517th birthday of the Italian painter. It attacked computer
systems throughout the world, turning data on hard disks into nonsense.
=====================
Computer Hacking:-
=====================
Criminals who tap into computer systems without permission are called
hackers. Using telephone lines, they can link up their own computers to
other networks and look at confidential data.
By changing or destroying data, they can steal money and goods. For
example, a computer file may record that 10 bikes were sold by a shop
on Tuesday. By changing the total to 11, a hacker could steal a bike
from the shop and no one would know it was missing.
====================
Scrambled Secrets:-
====================
Modern spying techniques often rely on computer hacking because secret
information is held by governments on computers.
Information can be scrambled in code so that hackers can't read it.
Computers can develop incredibly complex codes that would take a person
years to unscramble. The data can only be read using a decoding
program.
================================
Theft - The Most Common Crime:-
================================
Theft is the most common computer crime. This is a good reason to back
up your files - just in case your computer is stolen! Thieves often
steal just the chips rather than the whole computer, because they are
easy to carry and are unidentifiable.
=============
Pirating:-
=============
Copying software is also theft. Software is written by individuals or
companies in order to sell and make money from it. To protect their
interests, they put the software under copyright, which means that it
is illegal to copy it. Copying software illegally is called pirating.
