Allprograms in the Jacobs School of Music require an audition or interview, and in some cases, both. Many programs also require a pre-screening. Select your area's page for more information regarding audition/interview and/or prescreen repertoire requirements.
Many of our programs require you to submit prescreen recordings and/or materials. These are due on December 1, 2024, and must be uploaded and submitted to your Jacobs School of Music Supplemental Application.
At this time, live auditions and interviews will be held over three weekends on the Bloomington campus. If you are unable to attend one of the live audition weekends, please see your area's audition page for alternative audition/interview methods.
Please note: Public health and safety concerns could require the adjustment or cancellation of our on-campus audition plans. Please continue to check your area's page for any updates to these procedures.
If your area requires a prescreen, you will first be notified of your prescreen result by email. If you are invited to the audition/interview round (or your area does not require a prescreen), you will receive your audition schedule via email.
Please indicate on your JSOM Supplemental application that you wish to audition via final video recording and make sure to submit the Supplemental application by December 1. You can upload your audition materials upon submission or upload your audition materials after your application has been submitted.
Note: Some programs may require a media upload to submit your application. If your program requires this, please upload a PDF with your name and "Final Recorded Audition" to submit your application. You must then write to
musi...@iu.edu to request that your application be reopened. Once your application has been reopened, select "Upload Media" under the Action column and click on "Add Media File" to upload and submit your materials.
If you change your audition method to final audition recording after you submit the JSOM Supplemental application, please reach out to
musi...@iu.edu so that we can reopen your application for media upload.
To be a Music major, Music minor, or Musical Theatre major at UW-Eau Claire, you will need to successfully complete a music audition and be accepted into an applied studio, which is a group of musicians who study under one professor. Auditions take place in the year or semester prior to your first semester here; most students audition in the spring (January-March) for entrance in the following fall semester. Your program audition addresses three important areas: your admission acceptance as a major or minor, your piano placement exam, and scholarship consideration.
*Please note that all Spring 2024 audition dates have now passed. If you are looking to start as a music major/minor or Musical Theatre major in Fall 2024, you will need to contact our office at
must...@uwec.edu to set up an August audition.
We offer both in-person and virtual auditions. We encourage all students to audition in-person, if possible. In-person auditions are preferred because you can meet more of the music faculty and better determine if UWEC is the right fit for you. If you decide to audition in a virtual format, you will still sign up for an audition date on which you will have virtual meetings with faculty and the Department Chair via Zoom, but you will send in a video of your audition piece(s).
The attached document below gives detailed information on how to create and submit your audition video, if you choose to audition virtually. The video recording needs to be submitted prior to the date of your audition. Specific due dates are on the attached document below.
If you are auditioning for voice studio and/or Musical Theatre and planning to audition in-person, your audition must be accompanied live. You may bring your own accompanist, or our department can also provide one for you, free of charge. If you choose to use our departmental accompanist, we will need your sheet music (submitted through your audition application in Gold for Blugolds) no later than 2 weeks prior to your audition date. Music should be scanned as a pdf (one file per piece) and either uploaded to your Gold for Blugolds audition application or emailed to
must...@uwec.edu.
As you complete your audition application, notify your recommenders to expect an email from "Gold for Blugolds Scholarship Network" or "
schola...@uwec.edu". Tell them to look for your name in the email's subject line. Letters must be submitted at least one week prior to your audition date. Be sure to notify your recommenders of this requirement so they can plan accordingly. Your recommenders will receive an email with a link to this website where they will upload their letter of recommendation. Make sure to explain to your recommenders that they will be submitting their reference letter online; they will not be printing and mailing a letter.
The audition will consist of excerpts from two songs sung from memory and a sight-singing example which will be provided during the audition. Each excerpt must be 32 bars in length and from the musical theatre repertoire. One should be an up-tempo and the other a ballad. Folk songs, spirituals, or popular songs are not allowed. No a cappella or recorded accompaniments are permitted.
The voice faculty suggests that appropriate literature for high school auditionees may be found in the Singer's Musical Theatre Anthology published by Hal Leonard or from vocal scores of the complete musicals.
Accompanist:
Students are required to bring CONCERT size snare drum sticks, one pair medium mallets, and one pair timpani sticks. Concert snare drum, mallet instruments, small percussion, and timpani will be furnished at the audition site if needed. Please contact Dr. Crowell at least 5 days before the audition with any equipment requests so as to have the correct instruments in place for your audition time.
You may take some time between excerpts, but do not stop or pause the recording. Allow the recorder to capture the time you take between excerpts. When positioning the camera, be sure that we can see you and your instrument clearly in the video - the camera should be at eye level. The length of the recording should be approximately 10 minutes.
Applicants interested in participating in the jazz program should prepare a head and walking bass line for a jazz standard (this may count as one of the two contrasting pieces in the requirement above).
Applicants interested in participating in the jazz program should prepare one classical guitar piece and one jazz standard. For the jazz standard, you can play the head and improvise over a backing track or prepare a chord melody of a jazz standard.
The audition will consist of two songs sung from memory and a sight-singing example which will be provided during the audition. One memorized song must be in English and one song must be in a foreign language. Folk songs, spirituals, popular songs, or music theatre selections are not allowed. No a cappella or recorded accompaniments are permitted.
The voice faculty suggests that appropriate literature for high school auditionees may be found in the Twenty-six Italian Songs & Arias published by Alfred Publishing, the Joan Boytim/Hal Leonard series, the Boosey & Hawkes Imperial Edition series, or the Oxford series. Songs from the Class A State Music Festival lists are recommended.
