[theatre-sound-list] Chekhov's breaking string theory

I'm using some free time to transfer stuff from old reel-to-reel tapes, and came across the breaking string effect I constructed for Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard" at Leicester in the mid '80s.

 

I know lots of discussion has been had about what the effect means, but does anyone have any thoughts (or indeed proof) of how it was achieved in Chekhov's time?
