I have a Dell computer, an unknown manufacturer firewire card and a
Presomus FP10 connected to a Yamaha LS9-32. The problem is that OFTEN
the computer will not communicate with the FP-10, meaning no sound
output from the FP-10. It does not seem application related because I
use SFX, Vegas Pro and Windows Media and they all do not work when the
"system" is being troublesome.

We resort to restarting the system until it "catches" Once it is
working it is solid.

I suspect there is a compatiblity issue with the firewire card.

I also have a question. The FP-10 word clock and the Yamaha word
clock seem to be incompatable. The output level of the FP-10 changes
if I connect word clock...

Any help?

I had a similar issue with a echo Layla unit, where the FireWire hardware ended up being shot. Every once and a while it would work, and be flawless, but the other 9 out of 10 times it would require constant restarts.

Perhaps the fp10 is experiencing the same issue.

You must use one of Presonus' recommended firewire cards:

How are you connecting WC? I don't see any WC connection on the FP-10.
Are you connecting the S/PDIF out of the LS9 to the S/PDIF in of the
FP-10? If you are, are you selecting S/PDIF in as the clock source in
the FP-10?

That linked compatibility chart is also linked from the FP-10 page at
Presonus. I would find out if your system is not compatible. One of
the descriptions of the behavior of an incompatible system seems very
like what you are experiencing.

I have a similar issue with our Firestudio from Presonus. The issue
and solution seems to live in 1) the startup order and 2) the
FireControl software - It MUST be running before you open the playback
/ recording software, and I often have to play with the settings in it.

FWIW, my Roland OctaCapture has worked flawlessly so far. 8x8 analog
plus 2x2 S/DIF. It has a pretty good onscreen controller with routing
and mixing for 4 stereo mixes. Being USB2 there are no Firewire issues
with Windows computers.
