My current show was provided with a set of HME DX wireless comms, including the brick-sized 4+6 chargers (AC40?) and batteries (not sure what type).

As the person nominally responsible for them, are those chargers smart enough that it’s safe to leave them on with batteries in for long periods of time (meaning between weekends) or should they be turned off once green?

I've never had a battery turn-up bad from overcharging. Go for green!

I've been working in a venue (college theatre) with the same gear for ~1.5 yrs. Initially, I left the batteries in the charger - y'know, just cuz.  I think at around the 1-year mark - i.e. the start of last season ~September, I'd found something in a manual recommending not to leave them in for indeterminate long times, so I got in the habit of (telling the students to) removing the batteries from the charger - and cycling them to the little storage pockets.  Couple things:
I don't know how much duration they'd have previously, and I don't know how long they'd last now, since we use them for only ~4 hrs at a time. Haven't had any issues (with battery life).
My impression is that leaving them in for a day past "green light" won't have much effect, but rather if you leave them in the charger for a couple weeks past "Green light" then it might have some noticeable cumulative effect on the discharge life.

I'd be curious to hear what you might find out about this.
