Got a simple need for a bass mic solution that's visually minimal, as we're trying to reduce the gak seen onstage. Usually I DI pizzicato, and switch to a large-diaphragm condenser like a 414 for arco, but the musician's instrument has no pickup - so I'm looking for a solution that will work well for both sounds.

Even if I needed to roll with just a single condenser, I've never been particularly pleased with the amount of pizzicato sustain I get from a mic source, since there needs to be a minimum distance between the instrument and microphone for the bassist's bow to clear without knocking the microphone, and that distance decreases the proximity effect while also increasing the signal / noise ratio between the string and the ambient noise in the room, meaning less of a decay tail on the pizzicato notes.

Best I can figure is a DPA4099 or something similar.

Worth possibly trying the Neumann MCM as well or the AMT S25/26!

But the standard would be a 4099…

You can get very close to the instrument with a 4061 and the bass strings hanger. There's no proximity effect from an omni so the sustained arco won't overwhelm you, and it balances better with pizz.

4099 will work for both you and the musician.  Whether it works for the accounting dept, that’s another discussion.

Neumann MCM114. It's the preferred choice at Jazz at Lincoln Center for live and recording. We heard it and we bought six...more scheduled to be purchased. Awesome little mic. 4099 would be my second choice.

If DPA is too pricey, check out  Bass Mic – Bartlett Audio.  I have *not* used their Bass mic, but their cello and fiddle versions are really good.  With cello, pizzicato and bowing were quite balanced.  I've run across these mics a couple of times (players bring them) and I did not think they were inferior to the DPAs we have in-house.
