I have to run a speaker cable across a 20-ish foot wide carpeted stairway in a sanctuary. This will be a semi-permanent installation. I'm looking for some sort of clip that I can use to pull the cable taut against the bottom of a tread so that people won't trip on it. A piece of gaff tape at each end would be perfect except I don't want tape on the carpet indefinitely.

Any ideas? I suppose that I could use tape and just replace it every couple of weeks but there has to be something better.

Cable clips with holes to put a drywall screw through if there is wood
behind the carpet. If there is concrete behind the carpet it would not
be a good solution.. Next solution is a taught cable secured at both
ends with speaker cable sistered to it. There are also plastic and
metal surface mount electrical conduits. They are rigid and have to be
secured to a surface.

Hey Art,
Consider upholstery thread and a heavy duty needle. Maybe google “carpet thread & needle”
Curved needles are key, and maybe heavily waxed thread.

JvB,

I think that will work perfectly. Thanks for the idea.

I like the idea of upholstery thread and needle. Another option that would be a little more pricey but might help with visual appeal would be brass stair runner bar holders/brackets. There are closed types that wouldn’t work well for cables, but open types like the one linked below would be easy. There are also varieties that secure to the surface and then have a swing-open gate that could be useful if you have to remove the cable occasionally.

Hey Art,
Credit goes to Pre-Acme Tom Clark, sound designer on B’way’s “Laughter on the 23rd Floor”… I was working for Tom and got the job of sewing the phone lines into the bottom of the carpet. ;)

What, and give up show biz? ;)

Use copper foil under the carpet such as is sold by Listen technologies.

I sewed it down with carpet thread. It only took a few minutes and has worked perfectly.
