Hi, all:

I have a feeling this has been discussed before, but I haven't had time to check through the archives yet, I thought I'd see if anyone had any experiences to share running Windows XP on a Mac, specifically for running SFX.

Thanks,

Yep, we've talked about it several times, even more so on the SFX list.
:-)

It works really well. We have several folks running SFX this way. And
I've put together multiple Mac Minis with a Presonus Firebox for
companies that need a small, easy to move around system. The whole
thing fits in a rolling laptop bag.

My test system at home is a Mac Mini.

Drew did report some issues as of late. However I don't think they are
exclusive to running SFX on a iMac (systems he was using) because the
problem was not happening on all of his iMacs.

Richard-

One thing to clear up, most people run SFX via Boot Camp, not via a virtualization solution like Fusion or Parallels right?  In this way OS X has really nothing to do with it.  Just wanted to clear that up due to the wording of the OP.

SFX 5.6 runs pretty well in Parallels virtualization through OS X but you only get to use two outputs.

SFX 6 doesn't run so well in Parallels the few times I've tried it but, admittedly, I haven't really investigated it beyond the initial attempt. If it did work, you'd still be limited to the two outputs.

Boot Camp works like a charm.

This is a good sound list conversation! I'm currently negotiating with my IT Department to get me two mac mini's. One for Qlab (Our G4 has died and the G5 don't like being moved about!) and the other for a sits in control room running XTA, DME + Studio Manager via XP (and backs up Qlab shows when they are spec'd) because I'm tired of PC Laptops not doing what they need to when they need to! I think this is the moment where anyone more knowledgeable than me (all of you!) tells me not to do it! :o)

Thanks in advance

Steve!

Right. I would not recommend trying to run SFX with a virtual OS on top
of OS X. Too many extra layers between SFX and the hardware that way.
Even if you do make it work, I suspect performance would be
significantly reduced which obviously is not what you want from
something that is running your production.

So yes, please use Bootcamp.

True OS X has nothing to do with it when using Bootcamp. But the Mac
hardware still will. Luckily I have not seen any issues from my end.
