My "day job" is looking for something to replace some aging Meyer MM4's

Looking for (in order of priority):
Easily mountable to physical structures (probably some sort of existing yoke)
Self-powered
No proprietary or "unique" cabling. XLR highly preferred
Fairly small (definitely not much bigger than a Control 25)
Not crazy expensive

there aren’t really any speakers that meet all these criteria.

if you’re willing to give up self-powered (and therefore XLR):

  • d&b E4s are outstanding but expensive (NL4 connection)
  • k-array has a variety of small and VERY small speakers which sound pretty good using their own special amps (bare end connection)
  • EM acoustics EMS41s are perfectly fine and more affordable (NL4 connection)

if you’re willing to give up existing yoke, genelec 8010s are small, self-powered, and not outrageously pricey.

and of course you could always get new MM4s with home-made XLR adapters. you can use a single XLR with passive MM4s, or for MM4XP and MM4XPD (the kind that want signal and voltage) use two XLRs, one plug and one socket.

best
sam
